What you'll do

Join me, Maggie Mae, at Magpie Pottery Studio for a morning or afternoon of jewelry making with beautiful porcelain clay. Participants will have the opportunity to create unique porcelain jewelry including; earrings, pins, pendants, and buttons. After rolling out the clay into light weight slabs, guests can customize their pieces with a large assortment of interesting texture mats and rubber stamps. The porcelain can then be cut and combined into a multitude of shapes and sizes; circles, squares, ovals, diamonds, as well as asymmetrical forms. Methods of finishing their work with earwires, jump rings, and stringing options, will also be covered. A fully equipped ceramics studio with slab roller, kiln, and finishing glazes are available for use. Before departing , guests will pick preferred colors of glaze for their finished pieces, including, but not limited to; beautiful cobalt blue, deep celadon green and sunny ochre yellow. I will then kiln-fire the porcelain, glaze with preferred colors, and kiln-fire once more. Guests can pick up their pieces after firing ( approximately 7-10 days) or have them shipped home (cost of shipping calculated at this time).

Maggie

I first learned to throw pots on the potter's wheel in high school in the 1970's. After following a career in city planning, I returned to clay in my 30's and received a Masters Degree in ceramics from the University of Colorado. I have been a professional studio potter and teacher for the last 26 years. I have taught wheel-throwing and hand-building at local clay centers, colleges and universities for 2 decades. My ceramics have been shown at art galleries and shows throughout the southwest. My husband and I, classical guitarist David Yard, have lived in Santa Fe since 1998.

Where you'll be

Experiences at Magpie Pottery are conducted in my workshop/studio adjacent to our home. I have a 400 square studio with everything the guests would need; worktable, good light, 3 potters wheels, slab roller and outdoor kiln. We are located on 1.5 acres in the county of Santa Fe, New Mexico, about 15 minutes from downtown. We also have a beautiful back garden where we take breaks, eat snacks and pet the resident Husky dogs.
