What you'll do

This course is offered in seven modules. With a single booking, participants may choose one of the seven topics listed below to study. Students may also make multiple bookings so that they can study more topics. All courses will be offered in Chinese with English translation. The seven topics we offer: 1. Traditional Chinese Medicine Foundations We will learn the foundational concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine, including the relationship between Chinese medicine and the natural world, the theory of “chi” (energy), the theory of yin and yang, the theory of the five elements (fire, earth, gold, water, and wood), the twelve meridians, and the body’s acupressure points. We will also do an overview of the six traditional healing techniques of Traditional Chinese Medicine and allow students to choose one that they may experience and learn some basic techniques for. 2. Guasha, An Ancient Healing Technique Guasha, or “board scraping,” is the easiest to learn of the Traditional Chinese Medicine healing techniques. It is difficult to go wrong with this ancient healing technique of scraping a board across a portion of the body. This extraordinary and comforting technique can prevent over four hundred illnesses. Workshop participants will learn how to perform the technique, experience the technique at the hands of Dr. Liu, and learn some easy methods for curing or treating common ailments such as the common cold, muscle aches and pains, skin itching, constipation, diarrhea, allergies, insomnia, and nerve pain. 3. Moxibustion, An Ancient Healing Technique Moxibustion has the widest treatment application of any of the Traditional Chinese Medicine healing techniques. It involves taking a stick of dried Chinese mugwort, lighting it so it gently smokes (similar to how sage or incense is lit), and then smudging or holding the stick over the pressure point or area of treatment. This technique can be used as a curative, a preventative, or as a way of nurturing the body. It is the king of treatment techniques, outperforming every other technique. 4. Tui Na, an Ancient Healing Technique Tui Na is the use of hands on the body to rub, press, lift, push, or apply pressure to specific points on the skin. Its advantage is that it requires no tools or set up. As a treatment technique, it is related to but different from modern massage, for its primary goal is not to provide a pleasurable, relaxing experience, but to decongest patients’ meridians and activate pressure points. Workshop participants will learn how to perform the technique, experience the technique at the hands of Dr. Liu, and learn some easy methods for curing or treating common ailments such as muscle aches and pains, constipation, diarrhea, and fatigue. 5. Dao Yin, an Ancient Mind-Body Exercise and Self-Healing Technique Dao Yin is the best self-care healing technique of all the ancient traditional healing techniques and has no contraindications. In this workshop, we will study baduanjing, an eight hundred year old technique. Dr. Liu is very specialized in this technique after studying it at the Shanghai Shuguang Traditional Chinese Medicine Foundation, giving workshops on it to students at the Navy Retirement Center and other senior citizens’ homes, and practicing it daily over the course of six years. Workshop participants will learn a daily self-care mind-body exercise routine that is effective in preventing many conditions and treating common ailments such as fear of cold, muscle aches and pains, and indigestion. 6. Growing Chinese Mugwort Chinese Mugwort is the essential herb for moxibustion treatments. Known as the “king” of herbs among the Chinese, Chinese mugwort can also prevent mosquitos and other insects. It can also be used to calm the senses, soothe the spirit, reduce inflammation, improve sleep, fight infection, and remove pain. In this workshop, we will study the uses of this amazing herb and also visit a nearby farm in Pudong where Chinese mugwort is grown. There, we will learn how to plant and cultivate this plant in our own gardens. 7. Cupping, an Ancient Healing Technique Cupping, or ba guan, is a balancing technique for decongesting the meridians and reducing excess fire, wind, wet, or cold. Workshop participants will learn how to perform the technique, experience the technique at the hands of Dr. Liu, and learn some easy methods for curing or treating common ailments such as muscle sprains, the common cold, muscle aches and pains, constipation, diarrhea, and allergies. Each course can be modified to suit participants’ individual needs. Each course will conclude with a question and answer session.

Coda

Hello! My name is Coda. I'm excited to be a medium between cultures and introduce people to the wide world of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine has helped me heal physically and psychically. Growing up in the USA with a Chinese family, I had always heard truisms like “don’t drink cold water!” and “always blow dry your hair!” but it wasn’t until I met Dr. Liu at a workshop he gave on moxibustion that I began to study the foundational theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine and understand just how interrelated its many healing modalities are! Like many in the west, I thought TCM was mainly acupuncture, but it’s actually a whole regiment for lifestyle, diet, and relating to your bodily systems. Because TCM has enabled me to relate to my illness and wellness in a radically new way, I hope to also bring TCM into your life! The workshop’s host is Dr. Liu, a practicing Traditional Chinese medicine doctor and graduate of Nanyang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Dr. Liu has worked for the Shanghai Shuguang Traditional Chinese Medicine Foundation and been under the tutelage of famed practitioners from the Shanghai Pudong New District Traditional Chinese Medicine Association. With over ten years of experience in the world of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dr. Liu is pleased to share what he has learned from his clinical trials. The workshop's other translator and instructor is Haijun. Here is his bio: An audacious dream chaser, Haijun acquired a Master’s Degree in Foreign Linguistics after getting a Bachelor’s in Food Quality & Safety. He has been teaching English both in universities and test-prep academies for over ten years. After experiencing the amazing effect of acupuncture and herbal medicine, Haijun developed a deep interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Later, during a yoga retreat, he was introduced to a radio show featuring Dr. Xu Wenbing (who has two million followers on weibo.com) and immediately resonated with his TCM philosophies. In January 2017, Haijun was admitted to the renowned Beijing Hope TCM Academy founded in 2008 by Dr. Xu, and started a three-year study program that aims to cultivate TCM doctors. The masterfully designed curriculum has equipped Haijun with knowledge of, among others, TCM philosophy, meridians, diagnostics, herbal medicines, acupuncture, moxibustion, scraping, massage, martial arts practices, and hundreds of hours of observation in Hope TCM Clinic. Haijun uses an approachable method when teaching TCM to help learners gain a holistic understanding of this time-honored healing art and apply it to their daily life. With his passion for TCM and teaching experience, Haijun can lead a dynamic class filled with enlightening and restorative new outlooks to life.
