What you'll do

We will meet at Gabriel's Pier in Southbank and start with a rope demonstration explaining how tides are waves flowing along the shore; when a peak passes we experience high tide and six hours later the trough brings low tide. We will then walk along the river, stopping every 200 metres or so, to build on what we have just learnt. We will begin by exploring how these tide waves generate currents flowing along the shore, and we'll look out for clues in the river that tell us which way the currents are flowing. We'll then explore how meteorology [the weather] and astronomy [the positions of earth, moon and sun] can have a huge effect on tides - especially when they combine to create especially high tides that put London at risk from flooding, a phenomenon known as a Storm Surge. We'll then pass under Blackfriars Bridge and look out for whirlpools made by the currents flowing past the legs, and William will share stories of the biggest whirlpools in the world, 100 metres deep! We'll then head over the Millennium Bridge, finishing off by learning about waves and rip currents - and what to do if you get caught in one!
