What you'll do

You will be welcomed with some refreshments and an opening chat about aims of the session and everyone's interest in taking part. This will lead straight onto some information about the tools, materials and facilities available, including necessary health and safety advice and protective clothing. This aim will be get the students to familiarise themselves with clay and how to handle it and work with it to achieve varied forms. There will no use of traditional potter's wheels, but instead the focus will on sculptural forms, be these abstract or representational. Various methods and techniques for shaping and constructing, the means of supporting, and tools to cut, shape and add texture. The aim will be for you to follow on from experimenting to actually making a sculpture and to share ideas and thoughts with the group as to what inspires and what you hope to convey with the work. With clay it is easy to restart your piece, if not working as you wish, and drying can be aided with an air gun to complete your sculpture within time available. It will conclude with all sharing views on each others work. An opportunity to have work fired is possible, but this will occur separately.

Learn more about Nigel

Nigel

I became a sculptor late in life and acquired my passion for it through many courses and self teaching. This means I have a very hands on approach yet enjoy to talk and share ideas of what inspires and excites me. Working three dimensionally opens up many ways of looking at objects and visual reality in new and challenging ways. Over the ten years I have been working as a sculptor I have exhibited widely and run workshops introducing students to ways of thinking and doing sculpture with clay and other materials. I was a teacher in the past so enjoy sharing learning and creating with others.

Where you'll be

The experience will primarily take place within my studio but we may spread to the outside weather permitting. The studio has worktop/bench space for 5 partipants and I have wide range of tools and other materials as well a choice of types of clay. You will gather and have refreshments within our nearby house. If there is time we may take short walk to a stream where clay can be found in the ground.
