What you'll do

On the half day, half Island tour, we will take the State ferry to Sapelo Island from the mainland dock near my home while dolphins frequently dive in the boat's wake, rent an air conditioned, heated SUV from an Island resident, and tour the southern half of Sapelo with you driving, with stops for short easy walks. First, we'll see the University of Georgia's Marine Institute where "the father of ecology" made ground breaking discoveries of the previously unknown value of Georgia's salt marshes, the largest on the eastern U.S. coast. We'll walk by R.J. Reynolds dairy barn, now a research laboratory, see his unique beautiful Turkey Fountain, former carriage house, staff apartments (formerly an inn) and more. Then we'll drive to the impressive nearby R.J. Reynolds Mansion, which we will tour if a group isn't staying there. Next, we'll drive to unspoiled Nanny Goat beach on the Atlantic Ocean and the scenic Sapelo lighthouse, built in 1810, then tour the Hog Hammock African-American National Historic Area with with one store, two churches, and one bar before taking the ferry back to the mainland. If time allows, we will also tour the tabby ruins of the mule powered sugar mill.

Jim

I'm a retired local writer for area newspapers who has made a 30 year study of the history of Darien, Georgia, Georgia's second city, and of Sapelo Island just 6 miles offshore from my house, where I have hunted, fished, biked, hiked, boated to, and swam on the beach for over 30 years. I have had a lifetime interest in history which I minored in at the University of Georgia while getting a degree in journalism before a 25 year career in conservation with the state and federal government and two non-profit conservation organizations with state-wide memberships. We'll take a short drive to visit the Marine Institute's quadrangle with the former R.J. Reynolds Dairy Barn now used for laboratories by UGAMI and the unique Turkey Fountain. Then we will see the R.J. Reynolds Mansion, Nannygoat beach, and Hog Hammock.
