What you'll do
We’ll meet in a central location to study and chose a space/buildings to draw. I’ll give a brief description of the building/city history (depending on where we are) before we start to look at the composition of our drawings. I will teach you how to set up a perspective drawing and how to add depth and detail to your drawings. We’ll work through a series of steps to compose a well made perspective image of our first location. We'll take time to make sure you're happy with the way it works and we'll draw side by side to make sure the pace works for you. In the second half of our session, we'll use a more relaxed technique where your own style will become apparent! We’ll compare our drawings at the end of the session and hope to have provided you with a few more skills and confidence to keep drawing on your travels! We’ll be guided by weather and any particular places that you might like to record in your drawings, just let me know: all teaching and conversations are friendly and supportive. Drawing is after all an individual style of capturing something so every session will be unique! All sessions are led by me. All drawing materials will be provided, along with paper.
We will visit a local cafe midway through the session, so please bring cash for refreshments. Please bring your own water.
I will provide some good quality sketchpads and a range of pens and pencils and a protective envelope to take your work away.
I have been drawing buildings and spaces for over 25 years and teach architecture and design at Edinburgh’s College of Art. Edinburgh is my home city and I regularly coordinate drawing groups in our historic centre - looking at the beautiful interiors and historic built environment. I love drawing on location and keep a sketchbook with me at all times. I've been drawing for something like 40 years now - always looking around me and seeing new details and opportunities. I also regularly exhibit and sell works.

Where you'll be
We will be drawing in and around the Old Town, starting from the Grassmarket, before finishing in the Lawnmarket on the Royal Mile at St Giles' Cathedral (or vice versa). These are some of Edinburgh's oldest spaces and streets and will give us plenty of characterful places to sit and draw.
