What you'll do
Modernism has had several different meanings in architecture. Conversely, modernism also corresponds (in a rough timeline of events) to one of the most fascinating and disturbing periods in the continent's history. For this reason, I enjoy thinking about modernism as this malleable "material" that can be approached by many and applied to their will and need. Faro's present day image is as much the result of a laboratory for the works of Portuguese modernism as it is the living and breathing subtext of Portuguese history during the last century. This walk was, then, carefully though out to take you through the many different faces (and façades, lol) of Algarvian modernist architecture, providing you with the tools for a better and contextualized understanding, rather than the very poignant and biased opinions of voxpop on the city's overall look. All of this with a humorous touch and an approach that combines both local impressions with academic expertise to grasp the attention of both the architecture-history geek and the regular tourist looking for the authenticity you can’t find on them guidebooks.
Born and raised in the city; have lived here for the longest part of my life. The food is great, the weather is priceless but growing up I only cared about finding the best way to go around it. I believe this is what got me into majoring in Art & Architecture History and why I might be just the right person for this walk, aside from my sense of humour. But that's just my guess. Why not make yours?
I'll bring some handpicked seasonal fruit from my grandma's to power us up during the walk.

Where you'll be
We start off where tours usually end to walk through the decisive moment in the moulding of the city’s landscape, the late 1800s, and jump right into the more recent areas to delve into topics like regionalism, academia, modernism and post-modernism through original examples found in town. Don't let all this scare you away—this walk is where it all comes together to make it an incredible experience!
