What you'll do

During this beekeeping experience you will learn about the importance of honeybees and other pollinators, beekeeping basics, and have a chance to encounter amazing behaviours of honeybees first-hand. On our inspection visit to the beehives, we will put on protective suites and come in direct contact with the bees.

The honey we will will taste is unheated, unpasteurized and unprocessed. It is collected by happy naturally-kept honeybees in the wild meadows of old Kinghurst Forest. Designated as an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest (ANSI), Kinghurst Forest is a special place that offers a rare glimpse into Ontario’s natural past.

The mature hardwood old-growth forest provides the honeybees and other pollinators with a rich variety of rare native wildflower forage in May and early June. These spring ephemerals – plants that bloom briefly in spring, before the trees leaf out - are one of southern Ontario’s most beautiful displays and provide a one-of-a-kind delicately rich and vibrant flavour to the honey.

We’ll end the experience tasting local cheese and honey. If weather allows, our guests are welcome to have a picnic on the grounds after. Follow iamfreija on Instagram for latest updates and more photos.
Other things to note

My family had a great time learning about bees and beekeeping. My son has a fear of insects that have stingers. He learned to not be afraid of bees due the knowledge shared with us.

Definitely interesting learning about the honey production process and all my questions were answered by the host. Eating the fresh honey was delicious and we were able to canoe on the grounds as well since no one else was around. If you're around the area I definitely recommend given you are interested in the subject matter.

It was really great ! I would recommend this activity and location to anyone! They were generous of their time and were very friendly! Valentine was very thoughtful of the well-being of the bees, and gave us some inputs to how better understand the bees in the city and how we can help them !

Valentine was extremely knowledgable about the honey bees and made the experience very interactive. We were thrilled that we managed to find the Queen Bee among the hive! The snacks and honey at the end were a wonderful touch. We loved being able to explore the property and enjoy our honey by the pond!

My husband and I bought this experience for my sister-in-law for Christmas, because she loves bees and everything bee-related. I'm usually really nervous around bees myself, but somehow with Valentine's calm and knowledgable presentation I felt completely comfortable, even when we were right up close with them (I'm sure the suit didn't hurt!). He and Ghazal were obviously very passionate about what they do, and they provided a lovely assortment of snacks to enjoy at the end. They even let us take a walk around the property afterwards. It was a great afternoon, highly recommended!

This was such a great experience! Valentine is very knowledgeable and fantastic at explaining all the different aspects of looking after a hive and all the hard work bees do every day. It was fascinating to see all the different bee-haviour and watching them all do different jobs. We got to hold an unexpectedly hefty frame full of honey, and even spotted the queen. As a note to other interested parties, we never felt uncomfortable around the hive and didn't have any worries about being stung. It was a super-relaxed afternoon. Afterwards, we were lucky enough to enjoy some freshly harvested honey with tea and other snacks on their beautiful property. Truly an incredible experience for anyone, especially those interested in understanding more about the inner workings of a bee hive. Highly recommended.
