What we’ll do

From the early 20th century into the 1970s, the Big Nine in Chattanooga was a mecca for black music and entertainment: Tennessee’s very own Harlem. The Big Nine is located in the historic MLK District just a few blocks from the Tennessee River. I'll introduce you to a few blues musicians with ties to the Big Nine including Bessie Smith, Count Basie, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, and Ray Charles. …

Where you'll be

The Bessie Smith Cultural Center area, a museum and venue in downtown Chattanooga. The "Bessie" was created to preserve and celebrate African American History and Culture in Chattanooga through art, education, research and entertainment.
