What you'll do

Through this experience, you will get to know the other side of bustling Tokyo, where locals go to relax and enjoy history, folklore, nature and the arts. We will start by meeting at Chofu station (Keio line) at around 10 a.m. and walk along Tenjin shopping street towards Fudaten Shinto shrine, where an antique market takes place every second Sunday of the month. (approx. 10 minute-walk). We will then head towards Nogawa river (appro. 10 minutes walk), have a coffee break at a local cafe, walk along the river covered in pink during the cherry blossom season and visit the local farmer's market (another 10 minutes walk). We will then head to Jindaiji, a one-thousand-year-old temple complex, sorrounded by charming streets filled with souvenir shops, food stalls and soba restaurants, where visitors can eat locally-grown and handmade soba noddles for lunch. In the afternoon, we will visit the temple complex and head towards the Jindaiji Botanical Garden to enjoy seasonal flowers and plants (alternatevely, visitors can have a pottery making experience). In the end of the visit, at around 4 p.m., visitors will be free to soak at the local hot spring baths.

Liliana

I'm a non-Japanese national specializing in Japanese culture and Japanese traditional arts and crafts. I currently work part-time as a university lecturer and as a travel assistant, while also teaching English and Portuguese in different areas of Tokyo. I live in Chofu city, a hidden gem of Western Tokyo located just a 15-minute train ride away from Shinjuku. I love strolling around my local neighborhood and enjoying time away from bustling Tokyo. I want to share my love for Chofu by taking visitors to Japan for a deep dive in the history, tradition, and nature of this region.

Where you'll be

During this experience, visitors will walk from Chofu station to Jindaiji temple and Jindaiji Botanical Gardens (around 2 km). We will stroll around Chofu neighborhood and visit local shops, cafes, markets, hot springs, pottery studio and eat local food. Vegetarians and vegans are welcomed! Guests wil have the chance to hear about the history and tradition of the region, besides interpretation services and hear personal stories about Japan.
