What you'll do
Dolly and Molly, our fiberglass sheep "mascots" will greet you upon your arrival at Irish Fibre Crafters in Ardrahan village. Our spinning & weaving studio with craft gallery is spacious and light but also cozy; with spinning wheels, beautiful old wooden looms, and baskets of sheep and alpaca wool. Your host Sandra will start you on your fibre craft experience by chatting about the varied breeds of sheep in Ireland as you enjoy feeling the differing textures and softness of their wool. Next, Sandra will demonstrate traditional hand spinning and you can try it for yourself on one of the spinning wheels! A weaving demonstration will follow on one of three floor looms in the studio, and you may also want to give weaving a try. We'll then have a short tea and coffee break, and you can wander around our craft gallery, filled with unique items made by local crafters from Irish wool and Irish alpaca. To finish up you will try your hand at some simple needle felting, creating a small sheep to take home, out of real Irish wool. We hope that you will pay us a visit and experience these genuine Irish fibres and crafts.
