What you'll do
We will meet at my house in the South Downs for an introduction to the activity with coffee. I will give a painting demonstration, assuming that you are a complete beginner who has always wanted to try ‘en plein air’ watercolour painting. (You’re also welcome to join us if you have some experience, or would like to paint in a different medium.) We will set off on foot into the South Downs National Park, carrying a picnic lunch and art materials, which I can provide if you do not have them. The walk will head through fields to the village of Wilmington with its views of the mysterious chalk figure of the Long Man. From the ridge of the Downs we will have panoramic views over the Sussex Weald and towards the sea. Finding sheltered places to sit, you will begin your own watercolour landscape painting with my guidance. I will help you to select a view and create a good composition, suggesting ways to mix the colours we see in the landscape. We will have our picnic lunch at 12.30 then continue to walk and discover new places to paint. At 2.30pm we will head back to my house and garden where we will look at each other's paintings over tea and cake till 3.30pm.
I am an artist who specialises in teaching watercolour tecnique to individuals and groups who would like to walk in the South Downs and paint outdoors. I have lots of local knowledge of the history and wildlife in the countryside where I live, so one of my painting walks would include plenty of added interest. I have also taught painting courses in England, the Channel Islands and continue to do so in Greece.
I can provide you with everything you need for an outdoor painting session: watercolour paper, paints and brushes. We may…

Where you'll be
We will begin our session at my rural house and garden for coffee and painting demo, then walk to the village of Wilmington with its famous view of the Long Man of Wilmington, a mysterious chalk figure on the slope of the Downs, its ancient priory, church and veteran Yew tree aged 1600 years. We can then venture further up the hill for panoramic views of the Sussex Weald and South coast.
Things to keep in mind
Any experience can be cancelled and fully refunded within 24 hours of purchase.
Always communicate through Airbnb. To protect your payment, never transfer money or communicate outside of the Airbnb website or app.
Up to 6 guests ages 12 and up can attend.
You’ll need to take a picture of yourself that matches the photo on your ID. This is so Airbnb can confirm who’s actually going on the experience. You’ll only have to do this once.
We will talk or message beforehand to tailor the session so that it is perfect for you, e.g. you may want to walk a long way, or not far at all. You may want to sit comfortably with a chair and table, or you may be happy to sit on a mat on the ground. There will also be wet weather contingencies.
