What you'll do
We'll be exploring the true part of the "old city", i.e., the part that used to be protected by city walls. Even though many of the old buildings no longer exist, the place names that remain give us a clue as to what used to be there. We'll walk through the old city, and I'll show you what still exists along with what once was, as well as giving you tidbits of local history that you won't find in a guidebook. We'll also enjoy some traditional snacks through our walk.
I was born in Changsha in the late 1980s and spent the first part of my life here. Living abroad has made me feel strongly about this city and the local culture here, especially in an increasingly homogenizing China. Since returning here 6 years ago, I have actively participated in learning about local history and discovering old buildings and landmarks that are not well-known to anyone besides locals. I both know a lot about and also remember myself a Changsha before the glitz and glam, and I want to share that aspect of this city with others.

Where you'll be
We'll start from one of the former city gates and walk through old neighbourhoods. We'll see shops owned by brands famous during my parents' time as well as old buildings that don't get mentioned in guidebooks, and we'll also enjoy some true traditional snacks (and not [just] what is usually recommended in guidebooks).
