What you'll do
After we meet at the North end of Spearfish Canyon, we'll cruise between the cliff faces and trees, down the highway and up the creek running alongside it. On the way, we'll learn the names of many peaks, ridges, and gulches, as well as the different geological formations, fauna of the area, and even more flora. When we reach Cheyenne Crossing (the other mouth of the Canyon), we will turn back and embark on the hike of your choice. You'll learn the location and details of all of them along the way, but the trails I offer are: - Community Caves - Bridal Veil Falls (Rubicon Gulch) - Eleventh Hour Gulch - Iron Creek - '76 Trail - Roughlock Falls PLEASE NOTE I will be as flexible as possible to accommodate your schedule! Let me know when you're free and I will do my best to work around your schedule. The trip may take a little more or less time than scheduled, dependent on length of stops and time spent on trails. Spearfish Canyon is somewhat unique, in that many of the trails are word-of-mouth, locally named, and unmarked. This can make them extremely difficult to find! All the same, they are each unique and stunning, and so worth discovering and exploring. My goal is to tell you more about this beautiful place, take you on an immersive exploration of one of its trails, and leave you with enough information to enjoy more of the area when we depart!
I keep trail mix on hand in case of fatigue while hiking.
I will have bottles of water available, but I do recommend bringing your own as well.
I'm a fourth generation South Dakotan with a long familial history in the Black Hills. I am an avid hiker, reader, writer and chef! I am familiar with most every trail, peak, gulch, and ridge of Spearfish Canyon. I have extensive knowledge of the geology, flora, and fauna in the area, as well as knowledge of the settlement of the Black Hills. I'm very friendly, I wear my heart on my sleeve, and I feel a deep connection to Spearfish Canyon!
