Mushroom & Wild Edibles Hike

Kingston, Canada

Experience hosted by Ruthie

4 hours, Hosted in English

What you'll do

Our Mushroom Workshop takes place during a rejuvenating 4 hour nature hike on the trails of a 400 acre conservatory gem with flora ranging from old-growth forest to seasonal food plants. We will uncover new worlds of uncultivable, wild edible plants in their natural forest state when we seek Yellow, Black Trumpet and Cinnabar Chanterelles, Hedgehogs, Boletes, Oysters and my personal favorite - Lobster Mushrooms. You will learn to identify these and other seasonal edibles such as specific growth edible mushrooms, and will be introduced to spore printing. In the spirit of respect for the bio-system we will explore, you will be introduced to ethical harvesting and the selected edibles will be divided equally between each participant.

We are life-long learners of sustainable practices and this experience was perfect t for us! It was a birthday gift for my husband who is the cook in the family and he loved it! I found it fascinating as well but more for the stories and information than the mushroom hunting. We came away with a nice haul of edibles that my husband is going to cook up in the next few days. If you have any fear of foraging the wrong mushrooms, don’t. Ruthie knows her stuff inside and out. I couldn’t imagine a more qualified guide. There was a good mix of information and independent foraging. Ruthie told us about the field guides she uses, the medicinal mushrooms as well as edible and how to identify the good from the bad. If you enjoy wild mushrooms, sustainable practices, local wild edibles, or just an outdoor adventure that gives you something delicious in the end, this is the perfect experience.

It was a really fun exploration through nature and it was interesting to learn about all the different species of mushrooms. We went on a lovely walk in the forest, then made a delicious meal at home with what we foraged--Ruthie is an expert as well as kind-hearted person who really knows her stuff. We had the best time ever!

Ruthie was the perfect host for an experience like this. Even though we foraged in the rain, we didn't even notice because we were so immersed in the activity learning about the area and different species of mushrooms. Ruthie was very down to earth, super laid back and very knowledgeable, which made the overall experience relaxing, entertaining and informative. We definitely built skills that we will take with us on our next foraging adventures and will be forever grateful for that.

Fantastic experience. Ruthie is clearly very knowledgeable with her identification. Despite the rain showers, it was an exciting hike with a very plentiful reward!

If you have always wanted to learn how to harvest wild mushrooms then Ruthie is the person to help you fulfil your wish. Ruthie is very knowledgable and the spot she takes you to is full of different mushrooms. Make sure to bring a sharp knife with you as you want to cut off the dirt before you put your mushrooms in your basket. Ruthie does tell you to bring your knife with you. I will probably do this tour again with her another time to see what mushroom show up in different seasons.
