What you'll do

Make your way to the Governors Island Ferry Terminal, also known as the Battery Maritime Building, located on 10 South Street and take the ferry to Governors Island. We will meet on Governors Island's as you exit towards the Soissons Ferry Landing. Enjoy the panorama of downtown Manhattan and the famous surrounding landmarks! From here, we will lead you towards the Urban Farm while walking past historical points such as Fort Jay, originally built to defend New York City during the American Revolution and through Nolan Park, a remnant of the 19th century, lined by charming yellow houses that were once home to military officers. On our way to the Urban Farm Bee Sanctuary, we will also observe the pollinators buzzing around the native flowers that are in full bloom this season. Upon arrival to the Urban Farm Bee Sanctuary, we will begin with a 40 minute overview of what makes up a honeybee colony and proper hive inspection etiquette prior to our honeybee demonstration where you will see first hand the inner workings of a honeybee colony. We will then close our lesson with a tasting of Governors Island wildflower honey while learning more about the research being done at the sanctuary and how you can help! We hope you can take this unique experience home and feel inspired to create a sanctuary of your own.

Hello! We’re Carolina Zuniga-Aisa and Stacey Vazquez. We met during our Brooklyn Grange beekeeping apprenticeship program in 2015 and have been keeping honeybees on Governors Island ever since. As two native New Yorkers working in fashion design and hospitality, we feel that beekeeping is at the center of both major industries. For nearly 5 years, we have been sharing our passion and enthusiasm for honeybees with urban farm visitors, friends, and families. We continue to inspire visitors and advocate for native and honeybees at our Bee Sanctuary in partnership with The Honeybee Conservancy, a charity that creates bee sanctuaries around the U.S. to foster local food and honeybee education. We believe that in giving bees a chance gives us all a chance. Join us as we explore inside the hives of these fascinating and vital creatures!
