Mark

We are Mark Wylie and Paul ‘Donzo’ Donnelly, two conflict historians with qualifications in Irish History, Politics and Anthropology. We were both born in Belfast in 1968, the year the Troubles began. We have worked extensively in teaching, mediation work with interface communities and ex-combatants, and Victims & Survivors groups, and of course as tour guides. We began giving tours to visitors in 2013. We are immensely proud of our city and this is reflected in what we do. Our ‘The History of the Troubles’ tour was Highly Commended at the Northern Ireland Tourism Awards in 2019 and is the only ‘peace and reconciliation’ or ‘political history’ tour graded as Excellent by Tourism Northern Ireland. Paul is currently a finalist in the 2019 Wanderlust World Guide Awards, the first (Northern) Irish guide ever to be on the shortlist.

Where you'll be

Starting at Belfast city hall, we will visit 7 locations in the heart of the city including the pedestrianised central shopping area, the Cathedral Quarter, home to some of our best and worst bars, restaurants and street art, and then finish by the Beacon of Hope on the banks of the river Lagan, with views across to the Castlereagh Hills and the iconic cranes in Harland & Wolff.
