About your host

I'm a professional Shodo artist with a master license, which is the highest level of achievement for calligraphy in Japan. I have been practicing Shodo for over 25 years and have experience teaching all of its styles including tensho, reisho, and gyosho. Shodo is a big part of my life and I enjoy sharing this passion with everybody.

What we’ll do

Shodo—traditional Japanese calligraphy—has become an integral part of the Japanese tea ceremony, so we’ll sip on seasonal infusions over sweets as we get to know each other. Then we will begin with some yoga to put you at ease. After this, I will teach you the Kanji characters used in ancient Japanese writing. You’ll learn the basic process of calligraphy, including how to make sumi—the inkstick,…

What else you should know

I have a dog in my house and there will also be an assistant in attendance.

What I’ll provide

Drinks
Seasonal drink and sweets I will provide a seasonal drink and sweets, like Sakura tea for spring, and Matcha tea for summer.
Equipment
Shodo set I will provide all calligraphy materials needed including the brush, ink, and paper.

Where you'll be

We will meet in front of Toyo Libruary, which is near Toyocho Station, on the Tozai Line. I will send you a link with a map explaining how to get there. I will host you at my studio where you’ll see and learn about the longstanding tradition of Shodo, its significance to Japanese culture and religious heritage.
