What you'll do

A Ten Apple Farm goat hike is a two hour recreational and educational goat experience. You'll meet your hosts (and our herd of Alpine dairy goats), and hear about their 16 years of experience with goats and living on a small family farm. Once we've met the goats and the many other animals residents of the farm, we’ll set off on a hike through the Ten Apple Farm woods with the goats and Philip our sheep! The hike consists of an approximately one and a half mile loop trail through our woods on lightly groomed trails. Along the way we’ll talk about goats as pack animals, what they eat, and you’ll learn a thing or two about raising and caring for goats. There's lots of time for interacting with the goats, asking questions, or just soaking in the Maine woods and these adorable, fun animals. We end the experience with fresh goat milk and homemade cookies!

Please note: Children must be at least 5 years old and accompanied by an adult. 5 and 6 year olds should plan to hold a parent's hand during the hike. (Children under 4 must be carried).

Other things to note:
The hike is not strenuous, but there is a little bit of steep terrain in 2 spots. We have rope railings on the trail to assist with getting up and down in those spots, but guests who have bad knees, hips, or other difficulties with uneven or steep terrain should be aware.

Where you'll be

A Ten Apple Farm goat hike starts at our 1901 traditional New England connected Farmhouse and homestead. We have spent the past 16 years restoring the homestead's agricultural heritage. We are a diversified farm, so there's a little bit of everything here, and something for everyone: goats, pigs, sheep, mini horses, poultry, a large garden, fruit trees, and 18 acres of beautiful Maine woods and trails, on which we hike with the goats.

Karl and Margaret were so nice. Very patient and sweet. There were many great stories told, and I found myself captivated the whole time. Also they are very respectful of nature and they’re animals, which by the way we’re the cutest and very well behaved. I think it’s because they completely trust Karl and Margaret because they have a great aura and are really great people.

Who would have thought “hiking with goats” is possible?! But Karl and Margaret made it happen, and so nicely done too. This was an educational, fun, relaxing experience, highly recommended to anyone who wants to learn a bit about goats while going on a stroll with them. And Phil the sheep is just the cutest!

Karl and Margaret are such wonderful hosts! I have gone on 4 goat hikes with them over the past 3 years and they are so lovely, and so are their animals. The hospitality is unmatched. This is such a great experience I recommend it to everyone I know that likes animals!

We went on the goat hike as just a novel thing to do one day while in the area. It turned out to be much more than that. Learning about the goats, and the other animals at the farm, and about their farming and how they live. The other people on the hike were also interesting and friendly. It was interesting to learn so many varied things. The hike was fun and the goats are great- the whole experience was delightful.

It was an incredibly wonderful experience getting to hike through the woods with the goats and Phillip! We especially enjoyed getting to feed the baby goats as well as meet the other farm animals! And of course the milk and cookies at the end :)
