Animal safety

Our hosts and guests love their pets, and animals can be included as part of an Airbnb reservation in a safe and responsible manner. To help with this, we have some rules for hosts and guests to follow and we prohibit certain types of animals in listings.

Pet guidelines

The following guidelines apply to domesticated pets typically found in homes, such as dogs and housecats:

  • Guests are required to follow the host's rules around pets. Even if an offering says pets are allowed, guests are encouraged to contact the host to tell them what pets they may bring, and find out if restrictions apply. For example, a host may not allow pets on their furniture.
  • Hosts should notify guests if pets will be present at a listing. Doing so can help set expectations for guests with allergies, phobias, or other sensitivities.
    • Hosts can do this by indicating that pets live at the property under Property Information in Guest Safety and in the listing description or message threads.
    • For more information and tips, you can read What you need to know about hosting pets.

We are committed to including people with disabilities in the Airbnb Community. Service Animals aren’t considered pets and in certain jurisdictions, hosts are required to allow them. The same is true for Emotional Support Animals in certain jurisdictions. Learn more about our rules for Service and Emotional Support Animals.

Dangerous animals

Dangerous animals are those capable of causing severe injury, and include both domesticated and wild animals. Domesticated examples include snakes or poisonous spiders, and wild animals include nondomesticated animals like coyotes or bears. Dogs and cats that are typically found in homes aren’t considered dangerous animals, but may be considered aggressive or illegal animals based on their individual behavior (more information below).

Guests must obtain consent from hosts in advance of check-in before bringing a dangerous animal to an Airbnb offering.

When a dangerous, domesticated animal may be present at a listing, the animal’s presence must be disclosed, and reasonable and appropriate safety measures to secure the animal must be in place. Dangerous wild animals known to be potentially present at a listing must also be disclosed by hosts. For example, if a host knows that wild coyotes or bears sometimes frequent a listing’s property, they must disclose this information in their listing description.

Aggressive or illegal animals

Animals that are known to have previously attacked a person or another animal are prohibited. For example, a dog that has previously bitten someone is prohibited, even if properly secured and disclosed. Animals not permitted by applicable laws are prohibited in all circumstances.

Enforcing this policy

If an animal causes an injury or a user doesn’t comply with the policies outlined in this article, we take appropriate action, including educating hosts and guests on our policies, issuing warnings, or removing the violating accounts.
