Guest Travel Insurance Privacy Policy for the United Kingdom

Please note that this Subpage supplements our Main Privacy Policy and the Outside the United States Subpage and applies in respect of additional data processing which is carried out by us in order to provide guest travel insurance through the Airbnb platform.

1. Application

This Subpage (“Subpage”) provides additional information about the processing of personal data of individuals residing in the UK in connection with insurance policies and claims through the guest travel insurance made available through Airbnb.

2. Who controls My Personal Information

    2.1 Controller

    Where this Subpage mentions “Airbnb,” “we,” “us,” or “our,” it refers to Airbnb Ireland UC and Airbnb UK Services Limited, which are the Airbnb entities responsible for your information and data controllers if you reside in the UK in respect of the guest travel insurance. The two entities process your data independently - Airbnb Ireland UC is responsible for information related to the booking for which the travel insurance applies and Airbnb UK Services Limited is an independent controller of information it processes as an appointed representative of Aon UK Limited (“Aon UK”). Note that the guest travel insurance product is distributed by Airbnb UK Services Limited, an appointed representative of Aon UK, and underwritten by Europ Assistance S.A. UK Branch (“Europ Assistance”), which both act as independent data controllers of your personal data.

      3. Personal Information we Collect

        Purchasing guest travel Insurance is optional and if you choose to make this purchase, we’ll collect the below information for the purposes set out on this Subpage:

        3.1 Personal Information you choose to give us

          • Contact information, booking information. We collect your first name, last name, email address, date of birth, postal address and phone number. We also collect information about your trip to create the policy.

          3.2 Personal Information we Collect from third parties

          • If you submit a claim under a guest travel insurance policy, you can do so through the insurance provider, Europ Assistance. Europ Assistance then sends us your claim status (i.e. draft, submitted, reviewed, approved, closed, denied) so that if you contact us to appeal or dispute Europ Assistance’s decision, we can direct your message back to Europ Assistance. Europ Assistance will share certain claim information such as claim type, status, claim reason and when it was processed to assure the effectiveness of the programme.

          4. How we Use Personal Information we Collect

            We use the Personal Information we Collect for the following purposes.

            4.1 Create and manage your insurance policy. 

            Such as to:

              • Collect the information required to create your policy;
              • Make changes to your policy if you decide to change your trip, or change your policy;
              • Cancel your policy if you decide to cancel your reservation or your policy.

              4.2 Improve and Develop our Product. 

              Such as to:

                • Perform analytics, debug and conduct research;
                • Improve the user experience;
                • Provide customer service and training.

                4.3 Create and Maintain a Trusted and Safer Environment. 

                Such as to:

                  • Detect and prevent fraud and security incidents.

                  5. Sharing and Disclosure

                    The guest travel insurance is arranged by Airbnb UK Services Limited and underwritten by Europ Assistance, which is authorized by the Prudential Regulation Authority and subject to regulation by the Financial Conduct Authority and limited regulation by the Prudential Regulation Authority. Airbnb UK Services Limited is an appointed representative of Aon UK, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. As such, we share certain data with these two companies as set out below:

                    • Europ Assistance is the insurance company underwriting travel insurance for Airbnb guests. We send them the Personal Information we Collect to enable them to price and provide your travel insurance policy.
                    • Aon UK is an insurance intermediary and is the principal of Airbnb UK Services Limited in respect of the guest travel insurance product. We send them information about (i) basic personal details, such as your name, country of residence, and date of birth, (ii) details of your guest travel insurance policy, including number, status, purchase date, start and end dates. We may also provide additional information that Aon UK reasonably requires to meet its obligations in connection with the guest travel insurance product, including any legal and regulatory obligations.

                    We process your personal information as necessary to conclude and perform our contract with you to deliver your guest travel insurance.

                    7. Your Rights

                    You benefit from rights pursuant to applicable law. While some of these rights apply generally, certain rights apply only in certain limited cases. We may ask you to verify your identity and request before taking further action on your request.                     You have the right to lodge complaints about our data processing activities by filing a complaint with our Data Protection Officer who can be reached by the “Contact Us” section above or with your local supervisory authority or our lead supervisory authority, the Irish Data Protection Commission.

                    8. Retention

                      We retain information related to the guest travel insurance program for a period of four years to fulfil our contractual obligations to you and improve your experience on the Airbnb platform.

                      9. Operating Globally and International Transfers

                        As explained above, in order to provide guest travel Insurance, we share the Personal Information we Collect with Aon UK and Europ Assistance. We have established the necessary means to ensure an adequate level of data protection for any information transferred outside the UK. For any information transferred from the EU to the United Kingdom a European Commission adequacy decision applies. We have also put in place standard contractual clauses within Airbnb and with the relevant third parties to protect personal data and comply with data protection law. We will provide further information on the means to ensure an adequate level of data protection, such as a copy of the EU Model Clauses, on request.
