All About Ottawa
Canada’s capital shows off the nation’s cosmopolitan spirit, diverse history, and outdoor lifestyle. In the balmy summer months, it seems like everyone in Ottawa is on the water: Sightseeing cruises, pleasure boats, kayakers, and stand-up paddleboarders roam the Ottawa River, which flows past many of the waterfront city’s architectural landmarks. The river glides through the multicultural and bilingual National Capital Region — comprising Ottawa, Ontario, and the French-speaking city of Gatineau, Québec. After the last autumn leaves have fallen into puddles, winter welcomes ice skaters to the frozen-over Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site lined with parks and gardens. And year-round in the walkable downtown district, you’ll find the world-class museums, art galleries, and European flair that make Ottawa unlike any other city in North America.
The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Ottawa River
Ottawa looks good any time of year, as the region experiences four beautiful seasons. From June to August, you’re almost guaranteed warm, sunny days, with average highs in the upper 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The city’s many trees turn vibrant hues of red, orange, and yellow in autumn, when leaf-peeping and farmers’ markets are popular. Average daily temperatures drop from the mid-60s in September to the low 40s in November. Come winter, you’ll want to bundle up with coats and boots, as abundant snow and ice define the season — the high temperatures in January and February are typically below freezing. For spring trips, pack an umbrella and warm layers for the generally rainy and chilly days.
Top things to do in Ottawa River
Parliament Hill
Some of the capital’s most noteworthy landmarks and monuments stand in an area known as Parliament Hill, which borders Ottawa River and the historic Rideau Canal. The neo-Gothic Parliament Buildings — with their copper roofs and soaring towers — house Canada’s legislature, making this a grassy campus of great national importance. Nearby, you’ll find many of the nation’s top museums dedicated to history, science, and the arts.
Whitewater Rafting
The Ottawa Valley ranks as a top destination for whitewater rafting. Ottawa River outfitters guide both experienced and newbie rafters over the thrilling rapids. Many popular runs are a short drive from the National Capital Region.
Gatineau Park
Forests, lakes, and scenic overlooks mark the territory of this expansive federal park, which sprawls for nearly 140 square miles. Its varied terrain makes it popular for a wide range of outdoor recreation. Hikers and mountain bikers take to the 100-plus miles of trails lacing the park. Swimmers wade off the lakeside beaches in the summer months. In the winter, it’s popular with cross-country skiers. The coast-to-coast Great Trail passes through Gatineau Park.
