Echoing times gone by, this beautiful heritage home is a great base while discovering Jaffna. Price is for a double room and there are several rooms available.

The space

Squeaky wooden floors, high ceilings, big spaces, that’s what you’ll get in this majestic old place. Built over 150 years ago during in the colonial Dutch style, it’s got three double and three triple bedrooms, almost all of which have their own bathroom. There’s a grand balcony overlooking the garden and there are old artifacts on display. Great atmosphere.

Interaction with guests

Sarra’s guests are taken of by Mrs. Koneshwaran, who worked for UNHCR for 17 years before she started managing this home. She speaks good English and cooks great local dishes, such as pineapple and crab curries. Meanwhile, her husband loves to repair and resell old cars and when we were there he was working on a beautiful old Ambassador. Apart from tasty food, they can arrange transport upon request.

The good: Booking was very simple, with good instructions. They rent you scooters, which is nice. And their trusted tuk tuk driver is good. The bad: Arrival didn't work at all as described (no one picked up the phone I was supposed to call), and they had forgotten to give me soap, towel, linens. The food is not great unless you are a Sri Lankan guest, or know the managers. After having had the blandest curry of 3 months in Sri Lanka I decided never to eat there, and pick restaurants/canteens in town which serve you delicious food at the same price. It is very basic, and not all rooms have a mosquito net, which you really need, so insist on it. There is also not enough seating space when all the guests happen to arrive at the same time in the morning/evening. I would advise, too, to book on other sites, as it is cheaper (which I found out from other travellers). Not a great experience, have staid at much nicer places at much lower cost in Sri Lanka.

Great spot to explore Jaffna. Lovely character building which is a little rough around the edges (like much of Jaffna) but has plenty of charm.

Neverbeen User Profile

Neverbeen offers a wide variety of rare homes off the beaten track, from fisherman's huts and tree houses to heritage homes and tea estates. Our team hand-picks and visits every home and meet all hosts to make ensure guests have a positively memorable stay in places they've never been.

We provide travellers and home owners in challenging locations with access to one another, by offering communication services, online marketing services and tourism training, so that locals can make a living off their home and travellers can get to stay in places they have never been.

As such, Neverbeen works for a world in which everyone has the chance to earn income by renting out their home, regardless of language, internet access and tourism experience.

In Sri Lanka, Dishan manages our growing group of homes in cooperation with our scouts, while Rohan creates listings and provides service. In Amsterdam, Marten works out international growth plans. Our team of in-house programmers is constantly developing the platform itself and Ernst & Young does our finances.

The first country we're active in is Sri Lanka, a beautiful country with many undiscovered places to stay. Due to it recently having opened up to tourism after decades of conflict, it is a great place to start and pilot the Neverbeen concept. We plan to expand to ten countries before the end of 2017.
