About this listing

Large living space with a private sunny bedroom in trendy Crown Heights, just 20 minutes from Manhattan via express 5 train (just one block away).
Experience the fusion of hipster, Caribbean and Hasidic cultures and wander around brownstone Brooklyn; explore Prospect park, Franklin Avenue bars and restaurants, and local underground culture.

The space

Ever watched the sun rise over the rooftops of Brooklyn, peeking through the trees to herald in a brand new busy day? I love my large, sun-filled living room for the incredible views, and can't wait to share it with you.

Enjoy your private bedroom with a full size bed, closet, drawers and comfy corner couch, perfect for relaxing on after a long day in New York City. My vegetarian/kosher kitchen is great for cooking meals, making tea or coffee, or grabbing a quick breakfast before hitting the city!

Guest access

We share the space, but your own bedroom is private and features a small corner space for living and hanging out. You're welcome to share the living room and kitchen with me. At times I'm around in the living area and there may be occasional moments when I need the space for work or while hosting, but you are always welcome to join! Of course, the kitchen is available for cooking and eating meals, provided you respect the rules (vegetarian / kosher only, please use disposables for meat and poultry items).

There's no roof access but you're welcome to use the shared backyard for hanging out, meeting the neighbors and enjoying Brooklyn in summer!

Interaction with guests

I love meeting guests from all over the world and am always happy to help with suggestions for sightseeing, shopping, restaurants or cool events in the city. I don't often have time to go out with my guests but I'm usually up for a chat in the living room if time permits! (If I'm busy and don't chit chat every time you come in, bear with me - I often work from home and can get very focused! I appreciate my guests being mindful of that but I'm always up for a conversation the next time around!)

Other things to note

This is a fourth floor walkup, so bear that in mind if you're travelling with heavy luggage. The view is worth it, though!

Rishe is a kind and welcoming host. I stayed in her home for a little over 2 months and I always felt like I could ask her for help! The room is the perfect space to relax after a long day in the city. It's a little tight for more than one person though, but you can make it work. The only reason I hesitated giving 5 stars is the lack of central air and the walk up to the fourth floor but besides that, I really can't complain.

We had a wonderfull stay on Rishe's home. Rishe is really nice, was always helpful and share with us the good places to discover in New York. The place is very peacefull, close from subway with a direct line to Manhattan, and in a lively neighborhood, we met so much great people in the building. And you can also enjoy the big rooftop of the building. If you looking for a local place to enjoy Brooklyn's life this is perfect !

I've never had to leave anyone a negative review before, but unfortunately our stay at Rishe's was marred by cleanliness issues. The bathroom, kitchen, and "common area" remained unclean for the entirety of our two week stay. We even found trash left in our room including someone's boarding pass dated three months before we arrived. There was no fresh air in the apartment and no open windows at all during our stay, which coupled with the contraption over the windows and dusty fans, made the air quality inside was very poor. The fire alarm was dismantled in the living room, which was pretty scary in a fourth floor walk-up and the aforementioned barrier to the fire escape / window, has the potential to create an extremely unsafe situation. The common area was also occupied most of the time, or Rishe's things were left out on the table, so there wasn't anywhere to eat meals outside of the bedroom which was unfortunate. There also wasn't a distinct eating area, and the sink was always full of dirty dishes wherein if we needed a cup or fork, we would have to wash the item in order to use it. There was no dish soap as well, which made that worse. The area surrounding the sink was filthy, with soggy tea bag wrappers encrusted on the countertop. Aside from boiling water in a kettle, we did not use the stove. There was also a compost bowl in the refrigerator, which is totally out of order since rotting produce emits toxins into anything we would want to keep in the fridge. There was clutter everywhere and a mountain of brown paper bags in an already narrow hallway. As a host, Rishe was easy to communicate with, and she was flexible when it came to checking in and out. There were basic amenities like shampoo and soap, and we only had one set of clean towels for over a week stay. The host tended to be in the living room on the phone for most of the day. She can be pleasant during interactions. Needless to say, but we wouldn't return to Rishe's for another stay and hope that nobody else has this experience.

Response from Rishe:
Hi Sheal, As someone who hosts AirBNB often, and has always had pleasant experiences I was saddened and disappointed to read your review. Primarily, that's because I utilize communication to ensure that there are no disappointments, and do my best to remedy any issues immediately during the stay. It's unfortunate for me to see these complaints, many of which could have been rectified during your stay and some of which are actually not concerns (for example, the windows do open, the smoke detector is fully working and is only detached so it's easier for me to move it around when it goes off while cooking, etc... There is plenty of additional dish soap under the sink and was still some left in the bottle while there, and I empty the compost regularly and have done research to know that it's hygienically sound...) I don't think it's necessary to respond to each item here line by line, but I want to articulate for any future guests the importance of clear communication. I also want to apologize to Sheal as it seems she was very discomfited during the stay which I would have done my best to remedy immediately had I known. I also want to provide full disclosure in admitting that it's true the house was not fully up to scratch in terms of cleanliness during the stay, as I did have an upsetting job-related life shift the week earlier which threw me into hustle mode. I do use the living room for work and that is clear in my listing, and i apologize that it appeared that my use of the living room on the phone and to work made it appear uninviting. Much of the "clutter" there was simply day-to-day use of a workspace which I have highlighted on the profile but will update to make it clearer to future guests. I would hope Sheal and Harper can be more forthcoming in future about their expectations. (For example, I am happy to provide additional towels if asked but typically provide only one set on checkin, likewise, the listing is clear about the fact that there is no eating area and that I work from the living room, but I would be happy to make space if indicated). I wish Harper and Sheal all the best in their move to NYC and health concerns, and wish them all the best in their communication in future. To any prospective guests who are concerned about these issues, please feel free to reach out. Know that I've used this as a learning lesson to work on keeping my home and workspace clean at frequent intervals and hope all expectations can be managed in future. With gratitude.

Awesome stay! Rishe was super nice and friendly! We felt very welcomed and she helped us out and gave us tips to go out whenever we needed! The room was pretty comfortable even tho we were in the city all day it was a perfect room to just come home to and sleep! Even though we didn't use it much the kitchen was also super clean and user friendly. Thank you Rishe for letting us have a place to stay and being just the best!

Rishe is a nice host. She has her own lifestyle and was clear about the rules of the house. The couch I slept was OK, but sometimes I woke up with a backache because I couldn't move. Apart from that, the apt is close to the subway and it will usually take 45 min to get to Midtown Manhattan. Rishe could provide suggestions about places to go in NYC and if you are a world traveler, and you don't mind going up and down the stairs, you will certainly like her place.

I stayed with Rishe for several weeks after a sudden move to Brooklyn for work. She is such a lovely person and wonderful host, and helped me acclimate to the city with ease. The apartment is cozy and sunny, in a great location near transportation, culture, parks, museums, etc. Rishe is so friendly and accommodating- she really knows the area and was so helpful with recommendations! I truly felt at home during my stay, and will always remember the time I spent with Rishe and her home.

I'm an Aussie expat who has somewhat indefinitely relocated to the Lower East Side, where I love to explore my neighborhood, meet new people, and travel to other parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

My bi-continental existence doesn't leave much time for added travel, but I'm a former hostel-loving backpacker and couchsurfer and absolutely love getting to know new people in this town. I tend to host when I'm traveling or spending time with family in another part of the city, but my tour guide button is never switched off so the recommendations will come aplenty!

Digital strategist by day, writer/music blogger by night, I'm always up for an adventure and happy to recommend one to any visitors to this town!
