The Folk Art Barn is at the center of Cajun and Creole culture, only minutes away from the prairie lands and bayous to the Atchafalaya basin and beyond. Why stay in a boring hotel when you can save money and experience a unique and authentic cultural environment? Don't hesitate, book now.

Check ahead, because we live near the "Happiest City" in the United States - that is, Lafayette, Louisiana (for folks who haven't seen this famous study.)

The Folk Art Barn is funky, elegant and spacious - the perfect place for individuals or small groups to retreat and enjoy South Louisiana.

This rental is an entire house and includes 2 bedrooms, 1 and 1/2 bathrooms, kitchen, living room, and utility room with washer and dryer.

During this Covid-19 time, our guests are completely independent. We welcome them and strive to make their stay and local experience memorable and comfortable. We respect their privacy, as we expect them to respect ours.

The Folk Art Barn in on our Stonewood property, which is a modest agricultural plantation built in the late 1800's by one of two brothers who founded a local hospital. It was originally over 200 acres of agricultural land. Maison Stonewood was separated on 5 acres and the agricultural property was sold - but the 200 acres of agricultural land is still part of a working farm with vegetable production and cattle. All the original farm land surrounds Stonewood, protecting the rural atmosphere. The house, made of architectural stone, is set way back off the small country highway, so it is very quiet. We live in an area that is highly populated by artists and we love having many artists as neighbors.

We are in the countryside of historic St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. We are the perfect outpost - a cultural crossroad - between Austin/Houston/Dallas and New Orleans. The Folk Art Barn is set way back off a small country highway and surrounded by farmland, so it is often very quiet - except for the birds, the occasional cow bellow, farm equipment .

We have many artists come up from New Orleans to get away and experience rural Acadiana and its inspiring creative energy.

We will let our guests express their experiences:

"We have been raving about our stay since we left. They immediately gave us fantastic selections for places to go in the area. They made sure we were happy with our accommodations. They kept in contact while giving us all the privacy we needed."

"Jim and Christy are the most wonderful hosts. They are truly ambassadors of the area."

"Jim and Christy are warm, welcoming, and love having people over. Their house gorgeous like out of a movie."

"Truly why we love airbnb. Locals who show their lives and make you a part of it. One of those never to forget travel experiences. Definitely go and get a deep dive Louisiana experience!"

"We like to think Airbnb was created for these kind of accommodations. The location is wonderful but the best part is the hosts. Jim and Christy are amazing people who provide their wary travelers with everything they could hope for. We can advise you this: Go! You will forever remember the experience!"

"Jim and Christy are absolute gems. As hosts, they do everything you can ask for and more - they provide you with the true South Louisiana experience. Regardless of if you're staying in the house, the barn, or the Whirlybird, you're in for a treat."

"Wonderful outpost to explore the best of Cajun land, or simply rest at home and take in peace and quiet in an inspired and thoughtfully created residence."

"To say that Jim and Christy are wonderful people would be an understatement. Their property is beautiful and you can tell they really care about preserving the houses and land."

"Jim and Christy are at the core of the local community and are very generous in sharing their time and experiences. You really couldn't hope for better hosts!"

"The house and the grounds are magical."

Hi, what can we say about ourselves? We think big. We are creating a sustainable cultural compound, where all sorts of meaningful and fun events take place. We have our own Folk Art Honky Tonk - The Whirlybird - and other large Folk Art buildings on our property. We are easy going, love to share and we are easy to find on the world wide web; soooo, besides an overnighter or two, you can also take advantage of how our Folk Art World has been developed for human interaction, and make large group arrangements: get married (Jim is a registered minister), plan a fun party or have a crawfish boil of your own with your friends and family. Sorry to say, but there are just too many choices year round for live music and dancing, theatre and outdoor activities to be listed here. Join The Whirlybird Society and Fanclub. We are two artists living, working and playing in one of the most creative and diverse places in the world - exotic South Louisiana. This is our favorite foreign country inside the United States, "where you have to go North to get to the South". We love it so much, we tell people, "We weren't born here, but we got here as fast as we could." It is this dynamic cultural environment, this diverse community of multi-talented friends that stole us away from the SF Bay Area of California. We are now living our artistic dreams in the middle of Cajun and Creole country, where it is the norm to dance at breakfast or play several instruments at a jam or see alligators and exotic birds regularly during nature explorations. We are developing our home into a private folk art cultural encampment - which includes the historic agricultural plantation, Stonewood, The Whirlybird - our famous underground Honky Tonk featured in the June 2011 issue of Southern Living Magazine - the Folk Art Barn - and in progress the Train Station Tower. Also, we have our vintage 1966 Fireball camper. Our goal: a safe, independent, sustainable, super-fun place for Airbnb guests, friends and family to meet and share a variety of imaginative activities. As actors, you will see us both in Tom Krueger's feature length comedy, You're In Charge, which was shot in and around Lafayette, Louisiana - the trailer can be seen on the website. The film was featured during Festival International de Louisiane 2014 and we were honored to work with the likes of world famous actor, Mary Kay Place, and cinematographer, Paul Sanchez. As community innovators, we love creating unique, community-building experiences, so we founded The Steampunk and Makers Fair, which is a collaboration between Cité des Arts and The Lafayette Science Museum and the Lafayette Public Library. Now, Industrial and Architectural Design at UL, and, many other community, University and business leaders, artists, makers and innovators are joining us. As community educators, Christy is a Talent Theater teaching artist for Lafayette Parish Public Schools and Jim is an art/music/theatre talent evaluator for the State of Louisiana's Special Education, Gifted and Talented program, and teaching talent music in St. Landry Parish. Join us for a peaceful nights stay over, or, stay with us for some serious cultural action. Stay during one of the amazing festivals - or just make up your own fun - it's easy to do 'round here. There is Festival International, or Festivals Acadiens et Creoles, or The Steampunk and Makers Fair, or The Black Pot Festival and Cookoff, or Mardi Gras in the countryside. Oh, did we mention why we live here? We love to meet and learn from new friends, and share our folk art vision in this lively setting - in our one-of-a-kind, yeah you right, laissez les bons temps router, cultural encampment and sustainable community, which is way down yonder - where everyone belongs.
