(Review rating 9.3) A wonderful refurbished 1 bedroom self-catering property in this character farmhouse in the Hautes Pyrenees. The property retains many features such as beams, stone walls and contains two double beds. Private garden with barbecue and parking.

The space

This is a 1 bedroom property which accommodates up to 4 people, great for 2 adults or 2 adults with children. The main bedroom and mezzanine both have double beds. The mezzanine area is accessed via a ladder and is a favourite with children. Guests have a private entrance and enclosed garden with this property for outdoor living and car parking. There is electric heating throughout and a new shower room and kitchen. The living area has a flat screen TV, Bose docking station and seating for up to four with a pull-up table and stools for dining inside. There are plenty of beams and stone walls echoing the country farmhouse character.

I often use AirBnB and have stayed at Julia's and Dene's for a week. To be honest, I can't say that it was a pleasant experience and it is definitely overpriced. The place is tiny. It's basically a converted attic where they crammed as many bedroom as they could to maximise profit. Access to the mezzanine is on a ladder fixed to the wall. They say it is suitable for kids above 2 but, as a parent, I would never let anyone younger than 7/8 sleep there. It just wouldn't be safe. I can't imagine what would happen to children sleeping up there if there was a fire. Although it is advertised as suitable for 4 people, it was tight for two and it would be claustrophobic for 4. The description of the place says there is a "pull-out" table. What they call table is a small, cheap piece of kitchen worktop fixed to the kitchen counter by a hinge that you have to lift. To keep it pulled up you have to fidget with a piece of batten. What luxury... As I said, we were two, and this table was just about ok. I don't see how you would fit 4 people. What really, really annoyed me though may sound trivial, but it is representative of the not-very-welcoming attitude from the hosts. They're not rude or unpleasant, they're just not interested in resolving issues. On the first evening, I found out at 11pm that they wouldn't supply more than 1 toilet roll and 1 bin bag. I have never, ever, been told to bring my own by any other host - and I often stay at AirBnB's places. I let my house myself and I would never dream of telling my guests that I can't supply them with 0.60euros worth of supplies! In any case, their property description says they supply "Essentials" which specifically includes toilet rolls so from a contractual point of view, they have to. I paid 350 euros for a week so providing one extra bin bag and toilet roll was the least they could do, and not doing it very short-sighted and petty. Especially because the following day was a bank holiday so there was no possibility to buy anything. They bought me a couple of bin bags but we were left to ration toilet paper! The point that was the last straw was the unreliable internet connection. I am self-employed so I am never really fully on holiday. I always need to be able to manage my business, and most of it is online, this is why I never book places without internet connection. Theirs was listed as having internet connection however the reality was different. When it was on, it was unreliable, and it was down most of the time in our accommodation. I complained about it twice, and their reply was that they couldn't guarantee an internet connection. I looked at the info pack in the cottage and indeed they explained that...

Response from Julia & Dene:
We have been running our business for two years and this is the first review where a guest has not loved staying with us. It is unfortunate that these opinions were not aired during the stay as we are always keen to ensure our customers enjoy their holidays to the full . This gite has accommodated many couples and families and adult groups with an appreciation of the size which is clearly stated in the decription and the many photos. We provide a small gite reflected in the price of 60 euros per night for the gite in high season. It has been independently assessed and reviewed by the Tourist office as a 2 star establishment. We have wifi provided by a respectable Satellite provider but we cannot guarantee this 100 percent, as nobody can when they are dependent on a third party supplier. On the occasion in question there had been severe electrical storms in the area which can affect the quality of wifi. I will not respond any further other than to say that others wishing to stay with us please read the other reviews provided by satisfied customers. For other airbnb hosts I would recommend that you do not accept this guest unless you want to spend hours cleaning cat hair, toe nails and food crumbs from sleeping areas and food baked onto the oven. It was clearly a disappointing stay for both guest and host and one to move on from.

Julia and Dene made us feel very welcome despite us arriving late at night. The accommodation was very clean and tidy and had facilities that were above and beyond what we were expecting for the price. They shared their local knowledge with us and were very friendly hosts. The property is ideally located for exploring the area and skiing. We had a fantastic time in this cosy place.
