Stable Court is above Old Lands' former coach house. Access to this private apartment is by a covered stairway which leads into a spacious sitting and dining area with a high vaulted ceiling and original features. There is a large bedroom with three single beds, perfect for families, and in the eaves a double bedroom with en-suite toilet. One well-behaved dog is welcome to stay. Outside there is a communal garden to enjoy with outdoor eating area, and 80 acres of estate to explore.

The space

Stable Court, as its name suggests, sits in the old stable yard to the west of the big house. With its climbing roses, worn red sandstone walls and gentle planting, the recently landscaped yard has the feeling of an old quad. For eating out, there's a picnic table out front or another long table in the archway under the clock tower is perfect if the weather is not so good.

The self-contained apartment is accessed via a covered stairway which leads into a large sitting and dining room, a light and airy space with period features and a high-beamed ceiling. Off this room is a generous bedroom with three single beds, perfect for the younger members of a family to share. A small separate kitchen and bathroom are also located on this floor. Upstairs there is a double bedroom with its own toilet.

The big house is a grand but kindly old place, lived in by the same family for over 200 years. you will undoubtedly stumble across one of the youngsters who lives there zipping up the drive on their bike with a Jack Russell in hot pursuit. The 1,000 acre estate with the new generation at the helm is in a period of transition, with a new emphasis on the setting up of and supporting of gentle sustainable projects on site. It’s a family affair with all the Bosanquet generations, old and young, playing part in making it come together.

Guest access

With 80 acres for you to roam about in, a useful estate map of Old Lands shows you where you can walk, and as it resembles a pirate map, children love to colour it in. Check for natural history sightings on the board in the archway, and add to it anything you stumble across. While out on your adventures, if you discover a plant or insect that you need help identifying you can email a photo of it to Sam Bosanquet, the resident naturalist, who will identify it for you and we can add it to our Old Lands natural history database. You might also like to pick up a pair of oars for a row round the island on the lake, or wander along the yew-tree walk and toss a ball on the old, well-loved tennis court.

Interaction with guests

To the south of the yard sits the walled garden. You may glimpse Colum who runs the garden pottering about with muddy forest school children in tow. You can order seasonal fruit and veg from the walled garden to be waiting for you in your cottage. Parents can award themselves a lie-in by sending the children off to dig dens and muddy their wellies at the Forest School, (check dates its running before you book) We will pick them up from your door so you don't even need to get dressed. During your stay if you want a foody holiday, you can order wholesome, hearty home cooked meals in advance from a menu we can send you. We also have a small produce shop, Old Lands shop, in the stable yard with some of the products from across the estate. We have oodles of apple juice (thanks to a warm autumn), honey, eggs and chutneys, with vegetables to come as the walled garden comes to life in the early summer.
