Description

A gorgeous 3 bedroom cottage that catalyzed the food movement in 1970s Provence. Exquisite in its maintenance, it still carries the charm it was built to embody. A space to cook, commune, explore, and walk the footsteps of culinary greats.

Starting in Summer 2019, all guests will have ONE gourmet meal (dinner) cooked in the home by a private chef.

This cottages sits on well-maintained acres of gardens nestled just outside the community of Grasse.

A 3 bedroom, 3.5 Bathroom property that boasts glorious gardens, a kitchen that is designed for cooking (the twin of it is in a museum!). The space can comfortably sleep 6 adults, and we have additional sleeping spaces (think shared sleeping cots) for children (up to 4 easily).

A yoga space is available in the garden, and is a 16 ft canvas tent. It can host up to 8 students or so comfortably.

La Pitchoune was built by Julia and Paul Child in the 1960's and has hosted hundreds of famous food influencers over the years. In the 1990's Kathie Alex turned it into a cooking school, Cooking with Friends in France, and is now the home of La Peetch École de Cuisine :: Courageous Cooking.

Cooking classes run from April through June, and September though October. To book for the cooking school please visit our website. To find it simply search for "la peetch".

In the off season, La Pitchoune is available for rent exclusively through AirBnb.

For new Airbnb users: La Pitchoune is not a hotel. It is a living, breathing home that is and has been used heavily as a cooking school and home for nearly 50 years. It is also an indoor/outdoor living space, with many many nooks and crannies! It is always clean as a whistle when you arrive, every surface scrubbed and whisked. But know that it might not be up to the expectations of a traditional hotel go-er. It is an old house, with the same charms attached.

You'll have access to the entire house, the famous kitchen, and all the gardens. The yoga space may or may not be available, so if that matters to you please let us know and we'll make sure it is up for you and your guests.

The kitchen is marvelous, and is certainly a jewel! It is not a museum though. It is a functional, professional kitchen. And has been for years.

THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY COOKING CLASSES OR OTHER AMENITIES! The cooking school runs April-June, and September-October starting in 2017. To book the cooking school please search for "la peetch" in any web search of choice.

Please note: The guest house is private and houses the owners and/or our help on the property.

A unique piece about this property is that there are frequently concierge services available. But, those services are limited. What we do guarantee is a stocked larder for the first few days of breakfasts, some treats, and more.

The owners frequently are on site, and can organize private chef services if and only if they are around. (There is a lack of local private chefs!)

Please note: the courageous cooking school is not available to book via Airbnb. Airbnb is for rental and light concierge services only.

You're in the heart of Provence food country. There are literally hundreds of restaurants, wineries, and markets without a 2 hour drive. All of the recommendations are located in the 'black book', our guest guide in the home. No places need advanced reservations (beyond a day or two), unless during a national holiday/weekend during the high season.

It is highly suggested that you rent a car if staying at this property, it is almost a necessity. While occasionally there is a concierge on site to help you organize, it is cost prohibitive for many folks to have us shuttle you & your guests about.

You absolutely need to rent a car to have access to the area. The house is semi-rural, but only 10 minutes from many many villages.

There is a drop camera in the kitchen to ensure that the utensils of near priceless value aren't removed. The intact kitchen is similar to that of the one in the Smithsonian.

You'll be more than welcome to cook in the kitchen all you like! THAT is what it is there for. No footage will be kept longer than the duration of your stay. The camera is on intermittently only.

Thank you for preserving this iconic home and making it available to Julia Child super-fans! What a joy it was to cook, bake and do dishes in that wonderfully appointed kitchen, and to enjoy the fruits of our labor on lovely dinnerware around the big round table. The comfortable furnishings and lovely landscape and warm sunshine (most days!) were a balm for the body, soul and spirit. Craig & Tina’s suggestions, insights and information were most helpful too. Our best wishes for continued success with the property!

The house is so very charming and the views from the grounds were spectacular! Very quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed a nice welcome of French cheese, wine, fruits and bread. It is so lovely, I could have spent the entire time staying at the home! But there is so much to do and see right in the area. We loved walking around the small charming villages of Grasse, Antibes and Valbonne. (Yummy lemon crepe in Valbonne Centre ;-) If you want to eat at a restaurant, be aware of timing as many close between 3:00 and 7:00. We even took a day trip to San Remo Italy which was fabulous! So much fun cooking dinners, enjoying croissants and other french boulangerie pastries at breakfast with our friends. Our host Craig was very helpful in answering any questions and provided touring tips. All I can say is wow, this is a great place to stay and experience life in the south of France!

We thoroughly enjoyed being at La Peetch for a 6 night stay. I escorted my mother, celebrating her 75th birthday, and 5 of her friends, all lifelong cooks and Julia fans. The communication with Makenna leading up to the trip was excellent - she answered all of my questions and was very responsive. Materials she provided before the journey were helpful and proved accurate. Our concierge, Jennifer, was absolutely delightful. She welcomed us with wine and snacks after arriving after our international flight. She was indispensable with directions, ideas, and practical advice. It was an incredible experience to cook in the kitchen knowing its history. Many of Julia's cookbooks are there to use, and there are many books about her throughout the house to enjoy. The home is charming and comfortable with a fireplace, board games, travel books, a covered patio, and open deck in the terraces above the house. The grounds were just beginning to bloom, we had cherry blossoms and fruit in the trees, we heard lots of birds and roosters too. The weather during 3rd week of Feb. was mild - sweater and light jacket weather. The view from the deck above the house is lovely as well. Food shopping was a lot of fun and often eye-popping in variety and prices, which seemed, for gourmet items and wine, comparatively inexpensive to the U.S. We cooked with truffles obtained at the truffle market at nearby Le Rouret. Regional wine was great. Many many spectacular destinations are within an hour's drive. We had an art focus and visited the Maeght Foundation, St. Paul de Vence, Matisse's Vence Chapel, the Chagall Museum, the Matisse Museum, Roman Ruins in Nice, and Colombe d'Or. A car (recommend as small as possible due to narrow roads and tight parking in towns) and GPS is a must. It was much easier to use our own iPhone GPS than the car GPS. All in all a trip of a lifetime!

We had a lovely time at La Pitchoune! Well appointed house in decidedly peaceful environs. It was a real pleasure to cook in the kitchen. Couldn't have asked for a better place for a family reunion.

Stunning former home of Julia Child. It is indeed the "foodie paradise" as described. So comfortable. The host went above and beyond to help us during our stay.
