A gorgeous 3 bedroom cottage that catalyzed the food movement in 1970s Provence. Exquisite in its maintenance, it still carries the charm it was built to embody. A space to cook, commune, explore, and walk the footsteps of culinary greats.

Starting in Summer 2019, all guests will have ONE gourmet meal (dinner) cooked in the home by a private chef.

The space

This cottage sits on well-maintained acres of gardens nestled just outside the community of Grasse.

A 3 bedroom, 3.5 Bathroom property that boasts glorious gardens, a kitchen that is designed for cooking (the twin of it is in a museum!). The space can comfortably sleep 6 adults, and we have additional sleeping spaces (think shared sleeping cots) for children (up to 4 easily).

A yoga space is available in the garden, and is a 16 ft canvas tent some times of the year. It can host up to 6 students or so comfortably.

La Pitchoune was built by Julia and Paul Child in the 1960's and has hosted hundreds of famous food influencers over the years. In the 1990's Kathie Alex turned it into a cooking school, Cooking with Friends in France, and is now the home of La Peetch École de Cuisine :: Courageous Cooking.

Cooking classes run from April through June, and September though October. To book for the cooking school please visit our website. To find it simply search for "la peetch" on any browser.

In the off season, La Pitchoune is available for rent exclusively through AirBnb.

For new Airbnb users: La Pitchoune is not a hotel. It is a living, breathing home that is and has been used heavily as a cooking school and home for nearly 50 years. It is also an indoor/outdoor living space, with many many nooks and crannies! It is always clean as a whistle when you arrive, every surface scrubbed and whisked. But know that it might not be up to the expectations of a traditional hotel go-er. It is an old house, with the same charms attached.

Guest access

You'll have access to the entire house, the famous kitchen, and all the gardens. The yoga space may or may not be available, so if that matters to you please let us know and we'll make sure it is up for you and your guests.

The kitchen is marvelous, and is certainly a jewel! It is not a museum though. It is a functional, professional kitchen. And has been for years. Everything you need to cook is included.

THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY COOKING CLASSES OR OTHER AMENITIES! The cooking school runs April-June, and September-October. To book the cooking school please search for "la peetch" in any web search of choice.

Please note: The guest house is private and houses the owners and/or our help on the property.

Interaction with guests

A unique piece about this property is that there are frequently concierge services available. But, those services are limited, and not guaranteed. What we do guarantee is a stocked larder for the first few days of breakfasts, some treats, and more.

The owners frequently are on site, and can assist in finding private chef services with the folks we know. (There is a lack of local private chefs except through services which a quick internet search can provide, or we can pass off our contacts.)

Please note: the courageous cooking school is not available to book via Airbnb. Airbnb is for rental and light concierge (information, not maid) services only.

Other things to note

You absolutely need to rent a car to have access to the area. The house is semi-rural, but only 10 minutes from many many villages.

There is a drop camera in the kitchen to ensure that the utensils of near priceless value aren't removed. The intact kitchen is similar to that of the one in the Smithsonian.

You'll be more than welcome to cook in the kitchen all you like! THAT is what it is there for. No footage will be kept longer than the duration of your stay. The camera is on intermittently only.

"A peak life experience." This is how one member of our group described our stay at La Pitchoune. Our week was a delight from start to finish. The concierge, Baya, greeted us with warmth and took us through the cottage explaining its quirks and unique charms and assuring us that she would be at our service should we need anything at all - which she was. From the first meal we prepared in the iconic kitchen to the outdoor yoga, the poolside relaxation, the on-site massages we arranged (BlueTree Massage), the "en plein air" painting class in the beautiful Provençal light, the breakfasts on the terrace and the marvelling over the photos, books and other mementos of Julia's time at La Peetch - every moment felt special. While the owner had cautioned that the cottage was "rustic," we found comfortable beds, gorgeously modern bathrooms, every kitchen accoutrement imaginable and everything we needed to be perfectly comfortable and cared for. All in all we loved our time at this very special "foodie paradise" and consider ourselves uniquely fortunate to have had the opportunity to stay there. Thank you!

This is a one-of-a-kind experience and therefor defies a normal review process. The hosts are excellent, the property is what is is described as, and the stay is priceless for those who value the history.

It was such a treat to see your daughter in law's reaction! Truly! Thank you for being here with us, and allowing us to share that moment. :)

We had a lovely week at La Peetch. We had a ball cooking in Julia's kitchen, shopping for ingredients in the local grocery store and Valbonne Friday market. Morning runs for bread or croissants from nearby boulangeries produced some wonderful treats. Your home is warm, cozy, and just quirky enough to be so enticing. What history the home possesses and what promise for the future La Peetch holds. Frank and Tina were wonderful hosts and helped us with our questions and when we got "stuck" with what bottle/box held the dishwasher soap. Good thing we did not use the "draino"! The pool was a welcome space on hot afternoons. We loved seeking out new villages and driving through the countryside. Sweet Valbonne was a favorite. We looked forward to this trip with our friends for 18 months. It was so worth the wait! Don't be surprised if we return someday!

La Pitchoune is truly magical. We booked the dates a year and a half ago with our close friends with whom we all share a love of Julia Child, cooking and France. From the drive up to the house passing the sign 'La Pitchoune' to that first walk through the door, the presence of Julia and Paul Child is all around. The beautifully kept home, kitchen with the original pegboard, garden, olive and almond trees, stone patio where we ate morning and night, and the salt water pool create an experience unlike any other we've shared. Cooking in Julia Child's kitchen day after day is a joy and dream that those who love Julia understand. Each day we would wake up, eat breakfast outside and then go to the beautiful town of Valbonne to visit the markets-the butcher, vegetable market and poissonnerie, to buy the ingredients for that night's meal. Our afternoons were spent by the pool sipping rosé until the sunset and that's when the cooking began. The care that Makenna has given La Pitchoune is incredibly special and Kathryn, who oversees the property, was truly lovely. Thank you Makenna for giving us this time and these memories, we will treasure them forever. We cannot wait to return.

I've been putting off writing this review because I am still so sad we had to leave a week ago! Staying at La Peetch was one of the best experiences of my life. My husband, four friends and I stayed at the house for five nights and loved every minute of it. The house is amazing, and in great shape (a bit less rustic than I expected), and the pool is A++. And, needless to say, every minute in the kitchen was pure bliss. I spent a lot of time cooking — there were lots of basic ingredients already there, which was very helpful! I didn't get to meet Makenna, but Ryn was there to help, and was available to answer any questions we had. A few tips for future visitors: - Be careful on the driveway! And as small of a car as you can (for the south of France in general); there are so many narrow roads, driving up hills/mountains, etc. It's terrifying if you're not used to that kind of driving! - There is an incredible fig tree outside the house. If the figs are in season, eat them! Every day! So amazing. Same with the cherry tomatoes from the garden. - There are so many great little hill towns to visit within only a half hour drive. Really loved Antibes and the Provencal Market there, Tourette-Sur-Loup (tiny medieval town that produces lots of violette), and downtown Grasse. - If you're visiting in the summer and mosquitos like you, bring bug spray. Thanks, Makenna, for making this incredible home available to us! We booked our trip very soon after La Peetch became available on Airbnb, over a year and a half ago, and I'm so glad we did! I left with tons of cooking inspiration and incredible memories. I would go back in a heartbeat (and maybe will someday!).

Beautiful house, inviting pool, scenic views all around. What else could I ask for? We all had a WONDERFUL time cooking and eating food from our fave chef's recipes! I left feeling inspired and encouraged in the kitchen!

La Pitchoune is a gem. Makenna is a generous host, not only because she chooses to share this home with all of us and both maintain and build on it's legacy, but because you feel much more like a guest in a friend's home vs a random traveller passing through (ie: she provides a generous platter of food upon arrival and the fully stocked fridge and pantry for your use at any time). The location is perfect - you can be as calm or as busy as you choose. So many towns and historic places to explore, or let the days melt away as you read, cook and swim. Kathryn was there if we had any questions and several days, she left freshly picked veggies from the garden at the back door. I wholeheartedly recommend La Peetch and Makenna. We hope to stay here again someday.
