Waking up to the sound of a waterfall in the background makes Thilak's is a perfect spot to bunk down in Ella. Price is for the triple room with attached bathroom. There are two doubles rooms available.

The space

Thilak's offers three comfy double rooms, each with a private entrance and an attached bathroom with hot water. The rooms face the waterfalls and, with the windows open, you can hear the water fall in the distance. Amidst vegetable and rice plantations and surrounded by Coconut, avocado and banana trees, the place has a very rural feel to it. Vehicles can park some 20 metres away.

Interaction with guests

We were welcomed with tea and biscuits by Thilak, a retired army officer who lives in separate spaces on the premises, together with his wife and two kids who are - curiously - both called Nadeesha. The family built the house with a loan from the bank and run it together. Things are going pretty well so far. Upon request they happily arrange food, transport and tours in the area.

The hosts are beyond generous. The food amazing, and the location is secluded and quiet with great views. Close to Ella rock hike too!

The place is nice to escape Ella town. It's a 10-15 minutes walk away. The owner is very nice and really cares about his guests, so everything was fine - except the price in my opinion. It's a very basic accommodation which does not justify this price, at least breakfast should be included.

Beautiful views of the mountains around and a nice and clean room. The host was very helpful even though he had a little problem in speaking English. A 15 min walk from the city centre, but the walk along the railway tracks is worth it! Definitely would recommend!

This is an amazing spot. The family that runs it is kind and gentle. They are helpful and fabulous cooks. When laying in bed you look out over a lush mountain side. I never wanted to get out of bed. You are in a great location for hiking. Don't pass up this quaint 5 room hotel! We definitely will be returning!

Thilak (Jack) and his family were extremely sweet and caring, me and my mum stayed here over Christmas time and really loved being in this beautiful place. It's a little distance from Ella town but worth it for the peace and quiet with great views of the area, you can also walk along the train track to get into town in 20 mins. The family have 5 en-suite rooms to rent above their home and Jack and his wife were always around to help us with any queries we had, or to bring a pot of fresh tea and biscuits. Always with a wonderful smile :) Very good breakfasts and dinners made by Jacks wife! Definitely recommend eating here. We stayed for 3 nights and think this is the minimum, 1 night and you won't have time to relax and enjoy this beautiful place

Neverbeen User Profile

Neverbeen offers a wide variety of rare homes off the beaten track, from fisherman's huts and tree houses to heritage homes and tea estates. Our team hand-picks and visits every home and meet all hosts to make ensure guests have a positively memorable stay in places they've never been.

We provide travellers and home owners in challenging locations with access to one another, by offering communication services, online marketing services and tourism training, so that locals can make a living off their home and travellers can get to stay in places they have never been.

As such, Neverbeen works for a world in which everyone has the chance to earn income by renting out their home, regardless of language, internet access and tourism experience.

In Sri Lanka, Dishan manages our growing group of homes in cooperation with our scouts, while Rohan creates listings and provides service. In Amsterdam, Marten works out international growth plans. Our team of in-house programmers is constantly developing the platform itself and Ernst & Young does our finances.

The first country we're active in is Sri Lanka, a beautiful country with many undiscovered places to stay. Due to it recently having opened up to tourism after decades of conflict, it is a great place to start and pilot the Neverbeen concept. We plan to expand to ten countries before the end of 2017.
