Athenry town, 10 minutes by car is the best preserved medieval town in Ireland, retaining the upstanding remains of most of its original high-status buildings, in addition to its medieval street pattern and even individual property boundaries, or burgage plots. Over seventy percent of the masonry town wall survives, complete with an impressive arched gateway, five defensive towers and large portions of a surrounding ditch or fosse.
A restored Anglo-Norman castle towers over the medieval streetscape; a ruined Dominican priory and parish church lie within the town walls; a rare late medieval market cross stands
Park the car with regular train services to Galway City, Dublin, and Limerick.
The medieval towns of Athenry and Loughrea offer charming streets, local shopping, great food, and a true Irish atmosphere.
The Michelin-starred Lignum Restaurant is less than 10 minutes from the lodge.
Equidistant from Connemara and the Cliffs of Moher makes the nest a great place to stay to see all
Enjoy scenic drives to Connemara National Park and Burren National Park, and discover fantastic seafood restaurants along the west coast.
