This rustic ex-farmhouse, unreachable by car, lies within a beautiful national park in one of the largest areas of uninterrupted forests in Europe.
Solar power, fresh spring water, wood-fired ovens and the bumpy road, offer an authentic off-the-grid experience. It's the perfect place to go into the wild, take a break from urban life or have a digital detox. Hike to the monastery of St.Francis and the sacred forests of La Verna and visit the hidden gems of the Casentino.

The space
This charming 17th century ex-farmhouse is situated within the national park of the Casentine Forests and lies beneath the sacred mountain of La Verna (which is featured in the background of some of Michelangelo's most famous paintings such as the 'Creation of Adam').
It's the perfect place to relax, go on walks and immerse yourself in the untouched nature that surrounds the property. It's ideal for keen hikers and nature lovers. There are also many waterfalls and natural pools for wild swimming within hiking distance from the house. The rooms offer a minimalistic, comfortable stay. The house is completely off grid, meaning there is no mains electricity. However a small photovoltaic system provides enough electricity for lights and small appliances. There is no fridge or washing machine.
Mountain spring drinking water flows fresh from the taps. Wood burning stoves provide heating for the house and hot water. Firewood is provided. There are 2 WC and 1 bathroom with bath and shower. There are also cold outdoor showers for use in the summer.

We have a very well equipped kitchen with gas cooker suitable for preparing food for large groups. There is no gas oven but there is a primitive cob wood-fired oven outside which is available to use, especially good for pizza! Firewood is also provided for this.
There is also a barbeque.

The house is suitable for groups, families, couples and single travelers.
Pets are welcome.

For off-season stays during the colder months of the year please be aware that there is only wood-fired heating. Only 2 of the bedrooms are equipped with wood burning stoves. There is wood-fired heating in the living room and kitchen (including an open fireplace), but there is no heating at all in the bathrooms. The house is at 800m in the mountains so it can be very cold. For off-season bookings we will happily pre-light the fires before your arrival to warm the house and provide you with enough dry firewood for the whole duration of your stay.

Also, because of the lack of sun and daylight in general during the winter months the solar power system provides very minimal electricity. It's very likely that some evenings there may be no electrical light at all. In these situations there are candles already provided in the house for you to use. But for your own comfort it is highly recommended to bring a torch/flashlight (preferably one which is independent from your phone). A head torch is ideal.

Where you’ll be

Chiusi della Verna, Toscana, Italy

This place is best explored on foot. Being in the national park there are many great walks to do directly from the property. La Verna - the monastery of St.Francis - is a 1.5 hour hike up the hill and across the valley is the 'abandoned village' just a 1 hour hike.
By car you can visit the many hidden treasures of this still relatively unknown valley in Tuscany called the Casentino. Places such as the castle in Poppi or Il Pieve di Romena in Pratovecchio are definitely worth a visit.
We are also only 20km away from Michelangelo Buonarroti's birthplace - Caprese Michelangelo - and the picturesque town of Anghiari.

Please bare in mind that any daytrips by car will inevitably involve walking up and down the track to get to and from your car. So it's not an ideal place to use as a base to do a lot of sight-seeing. It is however the most perfect place you'll find to escape the tourist trail and just be in the nature and enjoy exploring the forests and mountains on foot.

We are George and Sophie, Caio and India from the UK, but lucky to live completely off-the-grid in a National Park in Tuscany. We are passionate about self-sufficiency and sustainable living. We have a large vegetable garden, use only solar power for electricity, heat our water with wood and source our water from a fresh mountain spring. We love building things, getting creative in the kitchen and, most of all, being outside and active in nature, whether it's hiking around the mountains or tending to our garden. As hosts it's important to us that our guests are satisfied and we do everything we can to make their stay as comfortable as possible. We offer the opportunity to get taste of our daily life in the nature such as chopping fire wood for the wood burners. Staying at our place provides an ideal setting for a back-to-basics experience. As travellers, we like to visit different and beautiful places to experience different environments and ways of living. We're keen to learn different ways of doing and making things and always look for inspiration from others to apply in our own home and life

During your stay

We live in a separate house just a 10 min walk further up the track so we are relatively close by and available if needed for assistance. We are more than happy to give advice on walks and trips to local areas of interest.
