Neighbourhood highlights

St Joseph Island is a quaint island off the beaten track yet easy to get to via a most scenic bridge. It's most known for its incredible maple syrup and friendly folks. During the Island's Maple Syrup festival from the end of March into April people can enjoy taste testing this liquid gold and visit local producers some of whom are still boiling the syrup down on wood stoves in a little shack in the bush. Gilbertson's Pancake House is the go to when it comes to eating out with maple syrup on the menu.
The island is great to explore on bicycle as most roads are paved and traffic is generally low. Needless to say water sports of any kind are a given. The two villages on the island, Hilton Beach and Richards Landing both feature various attractions such as marinas, community halls, libraries, gift stores, restaurants and bars. Too bad we don't have an actual brewpub yet.
Comes fall the island turns into a myriad of colours and visitors from near and far come to take in this annual phenomenon.
In the winter the Island is surrounded by a frozen water - the time of year to go ice fishing. Cross country skiers ourselves, we enjoy this time of year and most certainly welcome our guests to ski on our groomed trails free of charge.

I feel fortunate to live on a 140 acre farm with my partner, Detlef. Here we grow a big vegetable garden, raise our own beef, and keep a flock of free range chicken. Though we don't ride them our two horses are wonderful pets and keep the grass trim. We love our secluded setting "up the hill" yet can walk or bike to the village for supplies and along the way run into friendly neighbours. Every once in a while we go to Toronto to visit friends and take in city life; sometimes we make it back to Germany to reconnect with family. Our hobbies include road cycling and canoeing but we are most passionate about cross country skiing. Enjoying a sauna and socializing with friends over some beer or wine is an integral part of our lifestyle.
