Little Swinside Cottage has an idyllic hillside setting and superb views stretching from the Vale of Lorton to the Scottish mountains. Wonderful walking at all levels, mountain biking in Whinlatter, dog friendly, hot tub available, good wifi, log burner, very peaceful, Keswick 8 miles. (NB. Additional disinfection with 70% alcohol is being carried out between guests currently as well as other special measures).

The space
Little Swinside Cottage is one of 3 cottages at High Swinside perched on the slopes of Swinside fell overlooking the peaceful Lorton Valley. The Vale of Lorton is definitely one of the Lake District's hidden gems. Little Swinside is a converted former barn attached to High Swinside Farm. Some of the rooms have lovely oak beams and other original features. The cottage is centrally heated and very snug!

On the ground floor of the cottage there is a patio room with its own terrace where you'll find table and chairs for enjoying the view or eating al fresco. The patio room includes a double sofa bed that can be used for a child or friend to sleep in if you wish (for a small extra charge).

Most of the rest of the cottage accommodation is upstairs. The double bedroom is beamed and again has lovely views; the bed has a comfortable pocket-sprung mattress. The bathroom with bath and 'shower over' is just next door, while the sitting/dining room and kitchen lie beyond. The sitting room has a comfortable sofa, wood burning stove, tv/dvd, and a dining area looking out into the valley. The galley kitchen is well-equipped with stove, slow cooker, fridge, microwave, mixer. Guests also have access to a washing machine, tumbler drier, and freezer if they need (there is a small charge made for using the tumbler drier).

Guest access
Besides the cottage with its patio, you will have access to the shared gardens with their benches, picnic table, & hammock for enjoying the view. You will see free-range hens about the place (and there are almost always fresh eggs available). A wooded area of the garden offers a dog-friendly area where you can let your dog off the lead to explore and run about in safety. There is a also secure bike store available, and plenty of parking space. A footpath runs from the cottages to High Lorton 20 minutes walk away where you will find the Lorton Village Shop. The dog-friendly Wheatsheaf pub is a further 15 walk in Low Lorton (or 10 mins by car!).

Other things to note
There are two hot tubs at High Swinside - both with wonderful views and filled with water from the High Swinside spring. Both are wood-fired, and one of them can also be heated by solar panels. I make a charge of £10 a night for a minimum of 2 nights (payable in cash when you're here. Robes are supplied). Please let me know when you book the cottage if you would like to reserve one of the hot tubs for all or part of your stay (Note: there are 3 cottages here but only 2 hot tubs, so you need to book ahead).

There will be a basket of logs by your fireplace when you arrive, with coal, paper, kindling, and firelighters all included in your booking. More logs are available at a cost of £1 per basketful (please leave money in the honesty-box provided).

Everything else you might need - from washing up liquid, tea towels & kitchen foil to soap, shampoo, and toilet rolls - are all provided. The exception is bath towels which can be hired for £2 each.

Location

High Lorton, United Kingdom

Lorton is a serene and unspoilt Lakeland valley that has remained largely off the beaten track despite its charm and proximity to Keswick and Cockermouth. The walking is excellent - with open fell access on the high Grasmoor fells behind the house, and beautiful walks at all levels throughout the Vale. See the captions under the photos for more idea of how much there is to do and see here, or if you search 'high swinside diana' you can see more walking and activities information on my site.

I've done many things in my life (joiner, homeopath, walking guide, smallholder...) I've built wardrobes, run walking holidays, milked goats, made cheese - but always my heart has been in the Lake District, and now I have the good fortune to live in one of its most tranquil valleys. The Vale of Lorton is truly a Lakeland hidden gem! You'll find I live just across from the cottages with my hens - in case you need any help, advice, or free range eggs! (Some of the reviews below are from when I ran an airbnb cottage at my former organic smallholding in Shropshire).
