We are loving work in progress, endeavouring to create an eco-friendly, organic environment and are moving to be as self sufficient as possible, planning one day to be off the grid.
Guests are encouraged to walk along the meandering pathways through Woodlands garden, enjoy the views of the mountains, birds, butterflies and the variety of plant and tree life.
Our main entrance gate is locked at night and each suite has a key for ease of access.
There is free secure parking available on the property (1 vehicle per suite).
If guests wish to walk to Clarens center, in the evening, we have torches available as the sky is very dark at night with only a multitude of stars and the moon to guide the way.
Interaction with guests
Both Sherrene and Roy love interacting with their guests but are also aware of their own and the guests desire for private space and quiet time.
Other things to note
Clarens is endeavouring to maintain its individuality, there are no fast food establishments. There are two small 'supermarkets' which stock ones basic needs, Horeb Butchery and a small Bottle Store. These shops close early in the evening so please do not expect big city opening times. During the week if the town is quiet a number of the restaurants may also close early.
However there are many activities to do and see in and around Clarens. Clarens is known for its wonderful Art Galleries, Fine Food Dining, Craft Beer as well as being the Adventure Capital of the Free State for all its outdoor activities and extreme sports.
The stunning Rooiberg Mountains surround Clarens and are backed up by the mighty misty violet/blue Maluti Mountains.
In winter there is usually snow on the Maluti Mountains and one can travel into Lesotho (with a passport) to experience winter sports. On occasion we have snow in Clarens too.
The Golden Gate National park is a 20km drive and is a lovely outing for the day. It used to be the place where Dinosaurs roamed now watch out for Eland, Mountain Reedbuck, Oribi, Black Wildebeest, Blesbok, Burchell's Zebra, Springbok to name a few. The rare Bearded Vultures circle the skies above the lost pathways of the San hunter-gathers, who once dwelt in the park's caves and left their stories in their paintings.
There is an 18 Hole Golf Course less than 5 minutes away.
Whilst we are open to children visiting Woodlands Retreat, we do not specifically cater for them at this point in time. Parents/carers take full responsibility for their children and the care of our sacred space.
Parties or Events require prior written approval from Sherrene and Roy
Smoking is permitted outdoors, please deposit cigarette butts in the Butt Bins provided as we are endeavouring to ensure an eco-friendly environment both indoors and in the garden,

I am friendly, outgoing and welcoming. I love interacting with people in a relaxed way but am also aware of their need for alone time and mine.
I love peace and tranquility especially that which nature provides as well as the thrill of an electric storm. I would choose a visit to a secluded beach, mountain cottage or forest before choosing the bright lights of the city.
My Motto: Why walk when you can dance among the raindrops!!
