Characterful cottage with log burner, sleeps 2-5 including a comfortable double bedroom with ensuite shower (reduced price possible for 2 people Nov to March). Hot tub available - please book ahead. Dog friendly. Good wifi. Hillside setting gives fabulous views over the Lorton valley. Very peaceful. Easy access to great walks at all levels from lake shore paths to the high Grasmoor and Buttermere fells. Excellent mountain biking in nearby Whinlatter Forest. Keswick 8 miles. Cockermouth 6 miles.

The space
High Swinside Cottage is one of 3 cottages at High Swinside. Originally built as a farm workers cottage it is quirky and snug with old oak beams, lots of period features, central heating, and a log burner in the sitting room.

The bed arrangement is flexible to suit a family or several friends taking a break together. There is a spacious double bedroom with ensuite shower, a 2nd bedroom with a superking that can be changed into twin beds (please let me know beforehand which arrangement you prefer), and a single bedroom. The superking and the single share the family bathroom with a shower over the bath. (During low season from Nov to March the cottage can be booked by 2 people for a reduced price - please ask).

Downstairs the kitchen/diningroom is well-equipped with stove & hob, microwave, slow cooker, mixer, fridge with freezer compartment (a washing machine, tumbler drier, and big chest freezer are also available nearby).

In the snug sitting room next door there is a log-burner, satelite tv/dvd, and lots of books, games & puzzles. There is good wifi throughout the cottage.

Guest access
You will also have access to the lovely shared garden with its benches, picnic table, and 2 discretely located hot tubs for enjoying the superb views. There are also hammocks, a simple tree house, a pond with newts and tadpoles, and a camp fire circle. A wooded, fenced area of the garden offers a dog-friendly area where you can let your dog off the lead to explore and run about in safety. There is a also secure bike store available, and plenty of parking space. A footpath runs from the cottages to High Lorton 20 minutes walk away where you will find the Lorton Village Shop. The dog-friendly Wheatsheaf pub is 35-40 minutes walk away in Low Lorton (or 10 minutes by car). Behind the cottages lie the open fells with fabulous walking straight from the door.

You can reserve the hot tub for a minimum of 3 nights (@ £10 a night to cover the cost of heating the water). Please ask when you book as with 3 cottages here but only 2 hot tubs, they are not always available. See below for more details.

Other things to note
There are two hot tubs at High Swinside - both with wonderful views and filled with water from the High Swinside spring. Both are wood-fired, and one of them call also be heated by solar panels or off-peak electricity. I make a charge of £10 a night for a minimum 3 nights (payable in cash once you're here). Please let me know asap if you would also like to reserve one of the hot tubs for all or part of your stay - there are 3 cottages here but only 2 hot tubs! (Robes are supplied).

You are welcome to bring up to 2 dogs with you. Due to the presence of free range hens in the garden, please keep your dog on the lead apart from in the special 'dog run free' area. Dogs cannot be left in the cottage on their own, and are not allowed on the furniture.

There will be a big basket of logs by your fireplace when you arrive, with coal, paper, kindling, and firelighters all included in your booking. More logs are available at a cost of £3 per basketful (please leave money in the honesty-box provided).

Everything else you might need - from washing up liquid, tea towels & kitchen foil to soap, shampoo, and toilet rolls - are all provided. The exception is bath towels which can be hired for £2 each.

Location

High Lorton, United Kingdom

Lorton is a serene and unspoilt Lakeland valley that has remained largely off the beaten track despite its charm and proximity to Keswick and Cockermouth. The walking is excellent - with open fell access to the high Grasmoor fells behind the house, and beautiful walks at all levels throughout the Vale - including around the 3 lakes of Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater. To the north lies the Solway Firth within easy reach - offering windsurfing and kite buggying, nature reserves, and dog-friendly beaches. See the captions under the photos for more idea of how much there is to do and see here, or if you search: 'high swinside diana' you can see more walking and local activities information on my own site.

I've done many things in my life (joiner, homeopath, walking guide, smallholder...) I've built wardrobes, run walking holidays, milked goats, made cheese - but always my heart has been in the Lake District, and now I have the good fortune to live in one of its most tranquil valleys. The Vale of Lorton is truly a Lakeland hidden gem! You'll find I live just across from the cottages with my hens - in case you need any help, advice, or free range eggs! (Some of the reviews below are from when I ran an airbnb cottage at my former organic smallholding in Shropshire).
