The space
Accomodation is in a modern light and airy Yurt for 2 set above the small village of Megali Mantineia 15kms east of Kalamata, Greece. Relax in the beautiful gardens amongst the Olive trees or walk or swim in the sea 4kms away. Organic olive oil available. The kitchen is a metre away next to the yurt and is stone built. The bathroom is rustic up a few steps.

Kalamata is Messinia’s capital and the second-largest city in the Peloponnese. Built on the site of ancient Pharai, the city takes its modern name from a miracle-working icon of the Virgin Mary known as kalo mata (good eye). It was discovered in the stables of the Ottoman aga (governor), who converted to Christianity as a result of the miracles performed. The icon now resides inside the city’s cathedral, the Church of Ypapantis.

In front of the kastro(castle) is the small, but attractive, old town, which was almost totally destroyed by the Turks during the War of Independence and rebuilt by French engineers in the 1830s. On 14 September 1986 Kalamata was devastated by an earthquake; 20 people died, hundreds were injured and more than 10,000 homes were destroyed. There is a bus station in Kalamata and there are a few buses a day into town. Buses go to Athens regularly from kalamata and the express only takes around 2.30 hrs.. There are 4 Taverna's in the village and many more down by the sea. There is a minimum of 2 nights for staying. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.Ask me about private tours. Please note that it is advisable to rent a car or scooter as the beach is nearly an hour walk downhill. I can organise car hire, or taxi, or I can personally drive you for a small charge. Activities can be arranged just ask. Visit mountains not far away, lovely scenery. Visit old churches and monasteries, villages perched high, mountain streams, hidden tavernas and more.

Guest access
Guests have access to wi-fi and garden, no restrictions on where to sit. Please note this place is not suitable for children, or wheelchairs, the ground is uneven and there are high walls and ponds.

If you find yourself by the sea go up the left hand side of the dry river/rintomo canyon, marked megali mantineia, not road on right of canyon marked platoma. The village of Megali Mantineia is 15kms east of Kalamata. Take the road Aeropoli/Stoupa out of Kalamata and wind up the hill with the bay of messini to your right, you will lose sight of the sea when you get to Kriskios, a small village. Turn right and follow signs to Art Farm'this road takes you past an amphitheatre on your right, then further a church on your right and a cemetry on left. after around 50 m. fork left up the hill with the yellow railings, there is a large stone built villa Vager with a sign.and keep going left after the bend for about 300 metres, when you see a small square concrete water tower you will see our gate. Ta Xelidonia. phone if lost . If you arrive from the south turn left about 8kms after Kambos marked SANTABA In black and white (before Kriskios) and follow previous instructions.

Kalamata, Peloponnesia, Greece

The Mediterannean has always been a very popular tourist destination. Greece however stands out from all the rest because of the light that it emits. It is not a coincidence that everything western civilization knows today from democracy, politics, art, science and literature etc began in this small but at the same time big country called Greece. Its big because the culture of this country is multi faceted and every destination that one visits in this country carries its own colour and hue from the light, the immensely brilliant light that shines for those who want to discover it. One area that is exceptionally radiant and virgin is the Peloponnese and especially the Messinia region. The visitor who wants to explore this area will discover that there is so much to see and do here that not only is it comparable to the beauty and magnificence of the islands, it is so much bigger and offers all of the amenities that you would find in a modern city and it does not have water shortages or lack of medicare facilities that is so prevalent in many Greek islands. Another point is that Messinia is not overwhelmed by great hordes of tourists. The area is very Greek, it is not commercialised, and offers a great many opportunities. I highly recommend this area, as it is genuine Greek magnificence  and you cannot find a better place to become at one with yourself.
