The area around us
Palombaro is a hill-top town with a mere 1,131 inhabitants, which sits 536 metres above sea level. It boasts spectacular views over the Valley dell'Avello and is at the foot of the 2,252 metre high Martellese Mountain, one of the highest in the Maiella range. Palombaro was the Italian location for the 2011 film, “Lords of London,” which is set in the fifties, and features Ray Winstone and Glen Murphy. The beautiful church of the Assumption, which dates back to 1561, appears in the wedding scene.
During the festival season in August there are artistic and cultural events everywhere, including modern tribute bands, wine tasting and the opportunity to try all kinds of food produced in the area. Other annual events in June and July include a Maiella mountain walk sponsored by famous pasta makers Delverde, a Fiat 500 car rally and the Pescara International Jazz Festival. The local Cocco firm are sole pasta suppliers to the Pope
Casa Maieletta is located in the hamlet of Limiti, about 4 kilometres from Palombaro. The local road is closed off for the Beer Festival on the second weekend of August, which brings the young and old together, with traditional and modern music, and dancing.. The hub of Limiti is uniquely well-serviced for such a small place, with the De Vitis family-run general store complex, a hive of activity owned by the amazing Maria, which includes a bar, hardware store and petrol pumps. Maria, a celiac sufferer, has made sure that the store stocks a great range of celiac foods. An "agroturismo" restaurant, which serves food produced almost entirely on its own land, is only 3 minutes walk from the Villa.
Wildlife is abundant; wild boar, eagles, falcons and owls are often in the area, with Apennine wolves in the mountains. Wildflowers, such as orchids, that would be the envy of Interflora grow undisturbed on our hillsides. Fireflies make the beautiful clear night sky twinkle in May and June.
People are wonderfully warm and friendly, with an openness and honesty that is seldom found among the urban sophistication of more developed places.
Beaches within easy reach
The nearest beach, Fossacesia is 30 km away. The fashionable beach resort of Pescara is a 45 minute drive. It is also a small fishing & ferry port, with an excellent fish market, open in the mornings. Ferry destinations include Croatia.
Kilometres of uninterrupted seafront stretch between Francavilla, which neighbours Pescara & Silvi. The cycle and footway that runs along the Adriatic coast is a popular place for locals to promenade & socialise.
We supply free beach towels, chairs & umbrellas for days out at the coast.

The area has a significant place in WWII military history. It is close to the Gustav and Bernhardt lines, and the site of the Battle of Ortona in December 1943. Evidence of the conflicts of the time can be found in the form of bullet holes in some of Palombaro’s buildings. Commemorative events are held locally on Remembrance Day each year.
Villa Maieletta is an hour away from Pescara Airport; Ancona Airport is 2 hours and Rome Ciampino/Fiumicino around 2 1/2. Return flights for a couple from London Stansted on Ryan Air can be bought for less than £70. Although a car is recommended, there is a frequent and inexpensive coach service from Rome to Pescara which takes a similar amount of time.
A wide range of car hire desks can be found in airport arrival halls, with some of the most competitive rates offered on airline websites.
