This is one of three gites on this property, so if you are travelling single, as a couple, in a family or in a large group - this is the place to be! Set in a spectacular region of chateaux, vinyards, bike routes, historic, geologic and artistic interest close to the world-famous zoo de Beauval. We have taken pains to renovate the house and adjacent caves into comfortable welcoming spaces, to cuddle up in or take off and explore the region.

The space
This entire property is called Songbird Sanctuary, and here you are reading about our three bedroom main house, ‘The Swan’. It is 165m², with a fully equipped kitchen, two bathrooms, lots of comfortable spread-out space and three bedrooms. We provide towels and sheets. There is a wood-burning enclosed fireplace in the living room and a large flat-screen TV – you can watch either! Or choose to play our Steinway piano, in tune for all but the most exacting of ears ;-) .

The living room couch can also be used as a sofa-bed for two, and there is a separate cave bedroom that can be rented for larger groups. There is an open cave 'game room' on your private patio, we have a ping-pong table there, and a barbeque grill.

The kitchen has a full size refrigerator and freezer, four burner gas stove top, electric oven, dishwasher and small appliances. There is a shower in the downstairs bathroom and a bathtub in the upstairs bathroom. There is a clothes washer and dryer in the downstairs bathroom.

Guest access
From the gate down at the street level, you follow a scenic path up to your courtyard on the second level. You can enter your house either by the grand sliding glass doors, or through the kitchen. Your house is on two levels, with kitchen, living room/dining room/office and bathroom downstairs, and three bedrooms, library and bathroom upstairs.

Other things to note
The place is beautifully quiet, however there is a train track that passes right behind the houses on the other side of the road. We are a bit removed from that, since the gites are on the courtyards up on the second level, not directly facing the street - and are therefore somewhat shielded. There is no visual connection but you will be aware of the occasional train when it goes by.

We keep some bicycles for people staying here to borrow, and if you are interested in canoeing, there is a rental place right on the Cher, about a ten minute walk from the house. I’m working on developing a list of suggestions for places to go, things to do – and of course, restaurants in the ‘hood – and I would encourage you to write any of your own suggestions in the book I keep on site (as well as sending me reviews on this site and my web page!)

Location

Civray-de-Touraine, Centre-Val de Loire, France

If you are looking to spend some time in the Loire Valley, this location is fabulous – you can walk to Chenonceau, we are very near the river Cher. There are multiple bicycle routes, we keep a few bicycles in our storage cave for people to borrow. There is a canoe rental place by the river; you can canoe right under Chenonceau! There are many castles in the area; you are close to Amboise and the wonderful museum at Clos Lucé, Leonardo da Vinci’s residence, which houses many of his experiments, designs and paintings. You’re a half-hour drive to Tours in one direction along the Cher, and a half-hour drive to Beauval Zoo & Park in the other direction.

Frankly, I never thought I'd end up living in Paris but - you see, I met a man. On a ski trip - Alps - chalet - fireplace - well, it's been twenty years. I still can't give you the complete insider's guide to Paris, (I believe that takes three generations) but I can give you an ex-New Yorker's guide to this fabulous City of Lights. Our first studio was my husbands - that's where we lived once we decided to share a continent. We were there until our son was about negative-one-month old, and we didn't want to have to convert the bidet into a bassinet. Once we moved, I started renting out that apartment and everything fell into place. As an architect, I love fixing up the apartments, and as an ex-pat, I love meeting the people who come to enjoy their vacations in Paris. Now, we’ve also bought a property in the Loire Valley, and have just finished renovating that into several fabulous vacation homes – one of them is in a cave! You’ve got to see the pictures, it is a wonderful place – and the location is perfect for exploring the region – the chateaux, the wine, the scenery, it’s beautiful. Right near Chenonceau, right near the Cher river, bicycle trails, not far from Amboise and just 23 kilometers from Tours.

During your stay
We do not (yet!) live on site - we are mostly based in Paris - but try to be there at least to meet you when you arrive. We also spend as much time as possible living in one of the gites - most often in the Swan, so it is possible that we would be there during your visit. If we cannot make it, we leave the keys in a lockbox and full instructions for entering and getting around. In case of any problems, we do have people to call in the area, and our cleaning lady is also quite local, extremely friendly and accomodating (but does not speak English - yet).
