Tier 1 or 2only Great views, scenic walks from the front door and ground floor accommodation. We are very dog friendly and provide lots of extras for your pets. You’ll love our place in winter because of eco heating and woodburning stove. It is a great place for couples, friends, families and pets. The walk to Ashgill Force or source of the Tyne is worth the effort all year round. Alston is just 4 miles. Farther afield is High Force , Bowlees (more waterfalls), Hadrian's wall and Beamish.

The space
The cottage was built in the 17th century and started life as a bastle house. It has many original features and has some walls which are three feet thick. We completely modernised it in 20011. It now has a large airy open plan sitting area with kitchen and dining table. Two bedrooms with superking/twin beds and one double. Three bath/ shower rooms.
There are French doors which open onto a veranda with views over open countryside and the South Tyne valley. Just inside the front door is the boot/mud room room as we do seem to have our fair share of mud here, and you will need somewhere to store muddy boots after walking to local waterfalls or to see wildflowers. It also doubles as the dog's bedroom.
There is a family bathroom on the ground floor with heated floor for added luxury and a superking (or can be twin) bedroom. Upstairs are two more bedrooms and two shower rooms.

Guest access
You will have access to the whole cottage and garden, up to picket fence. There are quiet public footpaths close to the cottage, a steep path or road to Garrigill village, where you will find PO general store and an artist's studio

Arrival is from 4pm and check out time is 9.30am unless advised otherwise. Suitable for people with reduced mobility but not permanent wheelchair users.
parking for 3 cars.

Other things to note
Autumn and winter can be gorgeous here even when the weather outside isn't the best. Come and enjoy our cosy wood burning stove, enjoy quality time with your family or friends: cuddle up on the sofas with our soft blankets while watching a movie or play board games and puzzles with your family. The views are just amazing and on clear nights we can have sunsets to take your breath away.

The dark nights in autumn and winter are perfect for star gazing too. This area has some of the darkest skies in England.

We have hens and our neighbours have pet sheep and ducks. When we have eggs available from our hens we pop half a dozen in the cottage for your arrival. On arrival you will find teas, coffees, sugar, milk, (in a glass bottle), bread, butter, jam and eggs.

There is a lot to do and see. We have people coming back year after year and doing something new every day they are here. Alston has lots of cafes, pubs and independent shops, or favourites are Mellow Yellow, The Cane Workshop and Alston Wholefoods. In Allendale are cafes, studios, and Dr Who experience.

It is quiet here, quite remote, big dark skies, fantastic sunsets. Alston is quirky with cobbled streets, cafes and interesting shops. We have people who come here every year to buy their Christmas presents in the gift shops in Alston.

We have been letting our cottage for eleven years. We have many regulars who stay every year and keep coming back for more so something must be good. It gives us great pleasure when people have had a great experience and we aim to make your holiday meet our expectations of a holiday let. As a family we have travelled widely and enjoy home swapping and learning about other cultures. Our choice for holiday is more usually somewhere as quiet and remote as here, where we live, but we do occasionally have city breaks too. The best bit is coming home to the North Pennines. When you stay here we can advise on places to eat or drink, our favourite shops, things to do for differing ages and abilities. We can provide age appropriate toys for children. We can also be as discreet as you like and you will hardly see us: maybe only when we go out to feed the hens.
