Description

The space

This is a custom renovated home with attention to detail in euro-style.
The rooms in the apartment are large, have lots of light and wood floors.
One bedroom has a queen size bed, the other two single beds that can be arranged either together or separately. Fresh linens and plenty large towels are provided.
There are two full bathrooms, one on each floor, with open showers.
The Kitchen is fully equipped with high-end appliances and cookware, and stocked with plenty of spices, oils, coffee and tea, ideal if you love eating in.
The study has a large flat screen tv and a daybed that can be set up as an additional bed for an extra person upon request (see extra person pricing).
The heart of the house is the light flooded sunroom, and the terrace that leads to the backyard.

You will enjoy the greenery both indoors and out as well as the company of one self-sufficient orange tabby cat. No litter box maintenance required but you will be asked to kindly fill his bowl daily. He spends most of his time lounging in/-and outdoors, with no access to the bedrooms. Being an outdoor cat, he sheds quite a bit, especially during the warmer season. Please make sure nobody in your party suffers from cat allergies.

The neighbourhood

Red Hook is possibly New York's trendiest waterfront neighborhood. Packed with coffee shops, destination restaurants, neighborhood bars, gorgeous Valentino Pier on the water, weekends at Red Hook Ball fields in the summer and the famous Fairway supermarket, one could easily spend a day of wandering or a week of exploration. Just make sure to try a slice of Steve's Key Lime Pie, Bibimbap brunch at the Good Fork, the outstanding coffee at the Black Swan and more great food and cocktails at Fort Defiance. If you are a meat enthusiast Hometown BBQ is a must and you will find exceptional northern Thai cuisine down the street at Kao Soy. We like to live and eat well in Red Hook :)
And of course don't miss out on a special night at Sunny's with live music,
or a art event at Poineer Works
This house is located in an area that was flooded during hurricane Sandy, fortunately it was spared damage and local restaurants and businesses are back and flourishing.
Please support our local shops and restaurants. Thanks!

Getting around

Accessible via car, bike, the B61 bus and a water taxi.
Parking is easily available on same block, making it ideal for the motorized visitor.
Please note there is no direct access via subway, however Red Hook is located in close proximity to downtown Brooklyn where all lines into Manhattan are available.
The B61 bus that runs 24/7 towards either Park Slope or downtown Brooklyn. The ride to downtown takes on average 25min, and from there subways to the city take from 15 min to the financial district to about 35 min to the southern end of Central Park.
In addition Ikea, which is located 6 blocks away, has a water taxi that runs to Lower Manhattan (look up Ikea - Red Hook for the current schedule).
The size of NYC is easily underestimated, please allow for sufficient travel time during your visit.

A wonderful experience! Love Doris's very homey home and love the neighbourhood! Parking out front is always easy. Easy access to the Ikea ferry which is just 20 minutes to Manhattan.

Doris was an incredibly accommodating and generous host! From late-heads up, to changes of guest nrs, she took it all in stride. Her home is beyond beautiful, and will provide a Red Hook experience like non other. Couldn't recommend it more.

What fun to write about our stay in:Red Hook, Brooklyn! We rented a great house ( the4 of us) and it was Fantastic, lots of rooms, 2 great bathrooms, a sauna , garden etc. wonderful atmosphere and great to be in Red Hook. Red Hook is so totally cool and different from Manhattan, so you wake up in the quietness , village feel ,there,s nice little restaurants and bars, nature and water! Then, Manhattan excitement! We feel homesick already!Make sure we,ll be renting this house next year, with Darling Dodo, who owns the house and takes real good care of it ! Thanks for a Fantastic vacation! Groet. We had a fabulous time at Dodo's home. She was so warm and welcoming. The home was in a central location that made it easy to get a Uber car, bus and walk to a HUGE supermarket. The home is spacious and really unique. I would not hesitate to stay there again. In fact I look forward to it. Mr Cat made it feel like home.

You will not go wrong staying at Dodo's Large Garden apartment in Red Hook. Oxygen giving green plants throughout the apartment and a beautiful glass-filled room looking over the backyard garden creates an interesting and quieting effect. The decor is also enchanting, a mix of shabby chic, elegance, and industrial. All of it well organized and functional. We enjoyed the wood burning fireplace and reading in the backyard room, Mr.Cat, and the large kitchen table. The neighborhood had everything a person needs with an exceptional grocery store. Dodo is very welcoming and easily available for any questions.

Staying in Dodo's house in Red Hook Brooklyn, feels a little bit like coming home, even if you are far away from home. It was our first time in NY and we have never heard about Red Hook, but it was a fine place to stay, even if the Metro is 25 min. away by bus. The neighbourhood includes good restaurant's, a big supermarket and friendly people. Dodo's house was perfect for a family at four. Specially two bathrooms were nice. When we arrived late at night, there was cold beers in the refrigerator, very thoughtful, and so is Dodo, she cares about her guest and we feld very welcome. We would love to visit Red Hook and Mr. Cat again

I love plants; working with and talking about them, or just observing them, they make me happy.
Fortunately my other big love, traveling, matches this perfectly.
