The Space

Spacious and quiet bi-level apartment, includes two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, large eat-in kitchen, a comfy living room and a garden. This is a custom renovated home with attention to detail in euro-style. The rooms in the apartment are large, have lots of light and wood floors.
One bedroom has a queen size bed, the other two single beds that can be arranged either together or separately.
The Kitchen is fully equipped with high-end appliances and cookware, and stocked with plenty of spices, oils, musli and coffee/tea, ideal if you love eating in.

You will enjoy the greenery both indoors and out as well as the company of one self-sufficient orange tabby cat. No litter box maintenance required but you will be asked to kindly fill his bowl daily. He spends most of his time lounging in/-and outdoors, with no access to the bedrooms. Being an outdoor cat, he sheds quite a bit, especially during the warmer season. Please make sure nobody in your party suffers from cat allergies.

Red Hook is possibly New York's trendiest waterfront neighborhood. Packed with coffee shops, destination restaurants, neighborhood bars, gorgeous Valentino Pier on the water, Red Hook Ball fields in the summer and the famous Fairway supermarket, one could easily spend a day of wandering or a week of exploration. Just make sure to try a slice of Steve's Key Lime Pie, Bibimbap brunch at the Good Fork and the outstanding latte at Fort Defiance. And of course don't miss out on a special night at Sunny's!
This house is located in an area that was flooded during hurricane Sandy, fortunately it was spared any damage and most local businesses are back.
Please support our local shops and restaurants. Thanks!

Accessible via car, bike, or the B61 bus.
Parking is easily available on same block, making it ideal for the motorized visitor.
Please note there is no direct access via subway, however Red Hook is located in close proximity to downtown Brooklyn where all lines into Manhattan are available. The B61 bus that runs 24/7 to either Park Slope or downtown Brooklyn. The ride to downtown takes on average 25min, and from there subways to the city take from 15 min to the financial district to about 35 min to the southern end of Central Park.
In addition Ikea, which is located 6 blocks away, has a water taxi that runs to Lower Manhattan (look up Ikea - Red Hook for the current schedule).
The size of NYC is easily underestimated, please allow for sufficient travel time during your visit.

  • Dodo's home was beautiful, such great color and beautiful plants. She was a wonderful host.

  • Our family loved the stay in Dodo's large and personal bi-level apartment. Dodo is a very lovely person and she arranged it very nicely for us on arrival and we stayed in contact during our stay. The apartment is very nice - perfect for families with kids. From one of the bedrooms there is a nice view of the Manhattan skyline. The garden is great and so is Mr. Cat.
Red Hook is an amazing mix of old industry and new fancy distilleries, chocolate makers, wine- and coffee shops and the spectacular Fairway Market. Make sure to spend some time in this part of NYC with great photo opportunities. The bus ride to major subway lines is an easy 12-15 minutes ride.
Dodo, the apartment, Mr. Cat and Red Hook were the perfect base for our visit to NYC.

  • Dodo's apartment was an absolute gem, and she was a fantastic host. She kept in touch with us and took care of anything that came up during our stay. It is rare in NYC to have access to so much space- we were 2 couples staying there and it was spacious and comfortable. The garden is fantastic, and there are 2 big chairs so you can sit on the porch and admire the greenery. Red Hook is one of our favorite Brooklyn neighborhoods- as others have said, its not that well-connected if you are used to quick subway access, but a 20 minute walk away are the F and G trains, or its a neighborhood that promotes lots of walking. I walked daily for 45 minutes to downtown Brooklyn to catch a quick train to Manhattan for work. Red Hook is a foodie destination in it's own right, so it's nice to stay and absorb the local options and atmosphere. I hope to stay here again in the future!

  • Our family traveled to Red Hook from WA and SC for our son's wedding; Dodo was great to accommodate our kids early arrival. We enjoyed having such a great space to stay, hang out with our kids (that we don't get to see often) and be within walking distance to great restaurants and shopping like Fairway market, and wine shops. Staying at Dodo's apartment even allowed us to invite a few friends over for a pre wedding dinner celebration; they were all very impressed with the space too. Our son, who lives in Brooklyn, mentioned he had a case of "apartment envy" after seeing Dodos place. As project people ourselves, we appreciate the effort she has put into her bathroom remodels - well done and top notch. She is in the midst of remodeling her outdoor space which will be a fabulous addition - we look forward to seeing the completed project!

  • Dodo's place was wonderful and very comfortable. She herself was very accommodating when we arrived late in the evening; she even stocked the kitchen with breakfast fixings. Free parking everyday right in front the house was a big plus. Comfortable beds, luxurious rainshowers, working woodstove; all was good! Love the neighborhood, had a really fantastic meal at the Good Fork a few blocks away. Taxi into Manhattan was $18 and back was just $15. Would stay there again in a heartbeat!

  • Dodo, her home, and Mr Cat were a joy. The duplex is a beautiful refuge from the hustle and bustle. It's clad in brick, iron and wood with lovely finishes and softened with touches of home and -- can't fail to mention -- the lovely loads of plants. In agreement with another reviewer, the photos don't do it justice.

I can't say enough about the location. It's great to come back to after a day in Manhattan or checking out all that Brooklyn has to offer. The water taxi at Ikea is a great way to get into Manhattan. There is a fantastic pier park 2 blocks from the duplex and the immediate neighborhood in Red Hook has several fantastic restaurants and shops.

Loved my stay and hope to return in the future. Highest recommendations to anyone visiting New York.

  • Dodo's Red Hook Garden duplex was absolutely fantastic. I felt completely comfortable and loved cooking in her fabulous kitchen. The beds were super comfortable and I immediately felt at home. Dodo was very accommodating when I had an emergency and had to show up a day late. Mr. Cat was a sweetheart and super easy to care for. I loved being right around the corner from a beautiful park on the waterfront and taking the water taxi into the city. I would highly recommend this duplex for anyone who wants to experience a country home in the city and is able to deal with the transportation challenges that Red Hook has. The backyard of this duplex is amazing. Dodo is a quite a gardener with beautiful plants everywhere. My one complaint is the amount of mosquitoes everywhere in Red Hook this summer. That is not something anyone can control but did put a crimp in how much we could be outside without copious applications of mosquito spray. I hope that I can stay at Dodo's again. Definitely want to return.

  • Dodo was a very gracious host to my family, who were in New York for my wedding. Her place is an absolute delight. Everything about it is special - from the door handles to the window shudders to the garden. The house is located in Red Hook, which is my favorite neighborhood - timeless and an absolute refuge from the Manhattan hustle. I highly recommend Dodo's place.

About
I love plants; working with and talking about them, or just observing them, they make me happy. Fortunately my other big love, traveling, matches this perfectly.
