Where you’ll be

Daufuskie Island, South Carolina, United States

Very quaint neighborhood in the historical district of Daufuskie Island. SC. So much interesting history
Everyone is friendly! Best neighborhood very quiet
We have wifi and television but try to enjoy the island. It's very special.
I will coach you through all aspects of your trip so you can get the real insiders trip.

As a famous neighbor says:

I just love it down there. I love the people. I find it very obtuse to the way I was brought up, being brought up a Midwesterner.

And once you get on Daufuskie, you get on Daufuskie time. Time there is different than any time that I've ever experienced. I was talking to a woman there last week - there are only 125 people on the damn island - and she told me she never leaves. She said "I go into Hilton Head or Savannah once a month, maybe, and I'm there 40 minutes and I come straight back." And I totally get it. Because you actually are able to go to Daufuskie and live, not on somebody else's time, not on the man's time, not on the boss' time, but on your time. And you just create your own world. There's no cops there, there's a couple paved roads, and just can live. You get up when you want, you can eat when you want, you can walk into the ocean when you want. A watch is really no use to you on Daufuskie. On Daufuskie Island, only the sun matters. The sun's not gonna lie to you - it's gonna come up, and it's gonna go down. The rest of the time, it doesn't matter what time it is.

What does Daufuskie mean?
Daufuskie means “Land with a Point.” “Daufa” means feather and “Fuskie” means sharp or pointed. According to Billie Burn’s book, An Island Named Daufuskie, “The first Indians who saw it noticed that it had a point—reminding them of a feather which had been trimmed to a point.”

How do residents get their groceries?
Most full-time residents have vehicles on the mainland (Savannah or Hilton Head) and an additional golf cart on Daufuskie. Residents take a ferry to the mainland, park their vehicles at an embarkation center, go to the grocery store, drive their groceries back to the ferry and come home to the island. Typically, a trip to the grocery store requires a minimum of 3 hours, which is still less time than waiting for brunch in NYC!

What does “Gullah” mean?
Gullah (Gul-luh) refers to people living in South Carolina and Georgia who are descendants of enslaved West Africans who worked cotton and rice fields before they were freed and purchased their own land. In South Carolina, these groups of African-Americans and the language they speak are referred to as Gullah. At one time, Daufuskie had a large Gullah population. Today, only a few Gullah residents remain on the island, yet efforts are underway to restore Gullah houses and to preserve the island’s rich Gullah culture.

Lucy Bell's and the old Daufuskie Crab Company are great restaurants. The Coffee Grounds shop has a fine selection of coffee and tea drinks, and is a lovely community gathering place. We have several local ladies such as Sallie Ann Robinson, Ernestine Smith, and Ella Mae Jenkins who provide wonderful authentic cooking for residents and visitors. We have so many great local handymen, builders, and repair people...too many to name. Wesley comes over almost every Saturday to sell fresh shrimp and produce. We have exceptional artisans such as the Iron Fish Art Gallery, the Silver Dew Pottery, Daufuskie Peach, Daufuskie Blues, Wine and Woodworks, the Glass House, and more. The historic First Union African Baptist Church is one of our greatest island resources, and both the Bille Burn Museum and the Bloody Point Lighthouse museum and store are tremendously interesting. The Freeport General Store is chock full of cool stuff and offers a huge porch with rocking chairs for just hanging out. Adults and kids alike love the community farm! Tour Daufuskie conducts incredible island tours...they're not just for visitors!...plus kayaking and paddle boarding activities. We also have our wonderful community events such as the recent artisans fair at the Mary Fields School, the Christmas parade event, and the community Thanksgiving dinner. And our beautiful (free!) beaches are among the best on the Atlantic coast.
