Emelisa and I stayed at Maurizio’s airbnb for most of the month of February 2015. Our stay at Maurizio’s was very enjoyable. Maurizio was an excellent host who went above and beyond to ensure we enjoyed our stay. One example was Maurizio driving us to the bus station for our departure (possibly eager to get rid of us?). Important to us was the walking distance to the major landmarks of the city. At a moderate pace Santa Ana park (and start of the Paseo Montejo) is 10 minutes, Santiago park 10 minutes, the Plaza Grande 20 minutes and the Santa Lucia square 15 minutes. For us, walking different routes to each of these destinations provided mini sightseeing tours of Merida - but one needs to be careful; some of the sidewalks can be uneven and harrowingly narrow with traffic travelling too close, too fast. The B&B is a colonial home with 3 common areas (sitting room, dining room and kitchen) and with four guest rooms, each with en suite bathrooms. All the rooms are clean and welcoming. The kitchen is outfitted sufficiently to make it easy to prepare simple meals. Which we did quite often to rescue our meal budget - we found Merida restaurants to be similar in price to Toronto which was not our recollection when visiting Merida some 4 years ago. Another plus was the clothes washing machine available to guests. A convenience more than money saver. Clothes are sun dried. Two of the four guest suites are on the second floor and bookend an open air patio. Our room was one of these and we spent considerable time enjoying the sun and breeze of the patio. Our room was quite large and even the king sized bed still left us with plenty of room and a sense of spaciousness. The room had a large window which contributed to the airy, pleasant feel. Note that all windows are screened. The bed was of medium firmness and provided a decent sleep. The bathroom was modern and clean with double sinks, tiled walls and floor and a large shower. The air conditioner worked well on the few days we used it while conditioning our bodies from the -10 C of Toronto to the 30 C of Merida. There was also a mini fridge which kept our drinks cold and refreshing. I would recommend staying in one of the second floor rooms to more readily take advantage of the rooftop patio however, be aware that access to these rooms and the patio is via a spiral, narrow staircase not suited to everyone. The B&B is in the heart of the Santiago barrio, close to some very good eateries. Make sure you try breakfast at Maize, Canela y Cilantroas, lunch at the Bistro Cultural or La Negrita or LA68 and dinner at Dadaumpa (Italian), Ave del Paraiso (Thai) and Lo Que Hay Cafe for vegetarian. We enjoyed Merida and were we to return, we would be hoping for availability at Maurizio’s...

Maurizio was a great host, who really made us feel welcome. We felt terrible after getting stuck in traffic and showing up 2 hours late to meet him, but he was very kind and understanding. The house served all of our needs, and was so well priced! The bed is massive, and the room has A/C (it works really quickly + well), a mini fridge, an iron/ironing board, and even a coffee maker. The two outdoor terraces were great, and the double sinks in the bathroom were a nice perk. With a large common area that includes a giant living room, dining room, and kitchen, the house is a great place for anyone who needs a space to work. The wifi in the common area is great, though it gets a bit thin in the bedrooms on the upper level. Note that the rooms are all very private (ours had a separate entrance off of the second floor terrace). All in all, a great place to stay, and a wonderful host! Great deal for a lovely home.

Good neighbord, easy parking if you are in a upstairs room spiral staircase very narrow hard to carry a bag. Bathroom needs a railing it's three steps up from bedroom and slick if tiles are wet

Response from Maurizio:
Dear Brian & Barbara, thank you for being my guests, I also thank you for your advice, I am pleased to respond by saying that no one complained in relation to floors, and in the shower i also put the tapestry in just to wipe your feet, the spiral staircaseis narrow, but generally all guests without difficulty bring the suitcases, and if they could not, it's me personally to take charge to help the guests. thank you

Maurizio was gracious host! help with showing us around the house and give us information about the neighbourhood and the nearest shops..etc, as well as helping us with our luggages and settling in. Amazing host I definitely recommend him and his place to anyone who is traveling to Merida. Thank you x

Maurizio is an excellent host. He met me at the unit, helped carry my luggage, and offered a brief tour explaining the ins-and-outs of the unit. He also has printed information readily available of anything you could possibly need as a visitor to Merida including a map suggested restaurants, and bars. One of the best hosts in my experiences on Airbnb.

Maurizio's description was quite accurate. His home is recently renovated and is very new and well decorated. There are several units, each with their own lock, sharing a common cooking/sitting/entry area for the house. Our room had ample hot water at first, though ran out by the time my friend showered, though this isn't a big issue. The location is good. Relatively close to the center of town (~5 minutes driving); perhaps a bit far to walk, but a quick taxi ride. Maurizio met us at arrival and departure, making our stay smooth.
