Other things to note
Rubbish, Recycling and Excess Waste.

The Outback Shack is a sustainable, small, low-impact and environmentally values-driven business. Sadly we find many people are not responsible for their waste and expecting someone to clean up after them at no cost. This is now impacting the next guests through.

At home, a normal family only needs a single green and yellow bin to capture a week of normal waste. It makes us sad people come to the Flinders for the environment then they have a massive blow out. So we hope this guide helps support guests to be responsible for YOUR excess waste with just a few tips that will help everyone.

We support responsible tourism and SA is a proudly clean and green state. Here's how YOU can create more space, less waste and make room for others also staying at the Shack to enjoy the beautiful environment.

Council only does weekly collections Tues is recycling fortnightly, and Thursday is normal house waste collection. If you are staying on Monday or Wed night please roll out the bins for morning collection.

Other ways to can minimise waste:
- Don't buy single-use plastics and over-packaged food.
- Crush down boxes to better use the available space
- Please take your alcoholic glass/tins recycling with you or dro them off at Quorn Recycling in North Quorn for deposit
- Store food in glass containers you can re-use/wash and take home with you
- Keep recycling separate in the house so cleaners can deal with it better

Then, there should be enough capacity in the bins over a week, for everyone.

If bins are full when you arrive (we aim for this not to be the case) please let us know.

If bins are overflowing when you checkout, we expect guests to take your rubbish with you and dispose of it in your own bin or thoughtfully on the way home. Alternatively, if you leave it we can charge you a fee and dispose of it for you at the Quorn Waste Transfer Station for $10 per bag.

It's not difficult to minimise waste when we are thoughtful and conscious of what we are doing and expecting from others. We hope you have a great stay, and that your family and friends will feel good about making small changes with a BIG impact that comes from taking care of ourselves and the planet, wherever we are, every day.

Go well, be well, love well.

Location

Quorn, South Australia, Australia

Quorn is a small, pretty country town 4 hrs north of Adelaide in the heart of the Flinders ranges. It's a popular film location for many Aussie movies like Breaker Morant, The Last Ride, Picnic at Hanging Rock and more. The town has load of massive old trees, surrounded by hills and is a neat and tidy place, very quiet and clean with fantastic old architecture in the small town.

Quorn is home to Pichi Richi Railway, a unique steam train that runs to Port Augusta seasonally mainly on weekends and school holidays.

It's nestled in the dramatic hills and old mountain ranges of the Flinders Ranges, which just get better the further north you go ( Hawker, Parachilna - great pub, and Flinders Ranges National Park). It's a self-drive tourism town during winter, but without the commercial vibe.

The longer you stay the more you appreciate unwinding and slowing down to the great big peacefulness that lives in the hills, here.

30 kms drive west of Port Augusta
30 kms north of Wilmington and 60 north of Melrose if you plan to do mountain bike riding in Mt Remarkable NP. I recommend Over the Edge bike shop for more info and Bartagunyah trails (very cool, long single 'goat' track on the station, more accessible for non-technical riders, but still challenging enough to keep it interesting)

Other places to note:
The Quorn Rural Traders for hardware (QRT) Not open Sundays
Teas on the Terrace
Emily's Bistro for unique dining experience (closed during Covid times)
Quandong Cafe - do quandong pies - a MUST local delicacy/ bush food
Outdoor town pool open in summer
Visitor Info Centre opposite the IGA
IGA has the ATM - closes at 5pm
Good spot to stay between Adelaide and Oodnadatta Track/Birdsville Track journeys
Can get windy here, this makes it really cold, bring your fleeces/beanie
Beautiful sunsets, birds, wildlife like eagles, hawks, kangaroos and many emus
Yep, there's a golf course.
