A promising transaction that ended up as an unpleasant experience for us. This could have been avoided if guests seriously read through the rental policies and if they communicated prior to making their reservation any questions/concerns. So that, if we would not be able satisfy their requirements, we would have a chance to decline the booking. As a basic courtesy, we expected them to comply with our house rules regarding number of guests/visitors and the prudent use of the property which they failed to observe. They could have at least informed us of damages during their stay so we could have acted on it immediately. More than a month before their stay, Neil booked the place and we gladly accepted. It was an easy booking – minimal communications, no questions/concerns raised before check-in. However, upon turn-over of keys to the wife, Grace, it became evident that we would be dealing with an irrational and difficult guest. She made no qualms in giving negative comments, nitpicking on every detail. Why are there electric fans? Why only two set of towels, no extra beddings? Despite that she is a local resident and should be aware that April and May are the hottest months in the country, we explained that fans were provided to help redistribute cold air from the two aircons should daytime heat becomes unbearable. We also reminded her that the rental policy only agreed to provide extra towels/beddings for those staying for at least a month – not for shorter stay. A washing machine is provided should they need to wash the bed/towel set. Our listing also made clear that guests are responsible for their own toiletries. On the second day, Neil sent a message that they would like to cancel their stay because the fans are loud and they did not want to have to use them. I told him that we declined earlier guests requesting to extend their stay because of their confirmed booking, and should they proceed to cancel, we would have to enforce our booking policy which would mean forfeiture of payment. We didn't want this to happen so we offered to send the Maintenance staff to check the aircons, one of which they ended up servicing ahead of schedule. No communications thereafter and we assumed everything went well. Upon check out, we learned the following: 1.Laundry door was broken. 2.Glassware missing. 3. Some glassware/utensils we kept in a separate place for our personal use were taken and used without permission. We provided glass/dining/kitchenware adequate for two guests but they required more. 4.Bathroom sink clogged with bar soaps. 5.Their niece, who they allegedly asked to stop by to return the keys as they had to leave early, seemingly stayed at the unit. She did not hide that fact from us as she came out fresh from the shower and was brushing her teeth when we picked up the keys. We relayed these to them but they denied having knowledge of the broken door and instead came back to us with a litany of their complaints.
We love to travel and a perfect place to stay is always at the top of our list when we are away. Warm, home-y, convenient, tasteful, safe...and fun. Those are the key words that would describe what we look for in a place to stay. And those are what we had in mind when we decid…
