Val is a great host and super accommodating, and she really helped me with both the trails I was doing and then a minor medical emergency that made me have to leave the island early. The house is very simple, clean. One thing that was kind of annoying was the shower, because it was hard to get and then keep the hot water going (you have to let just a trickle out for it to heat up enough, but there's so little coming out the electric trip often shuts off. This won't be a problem in hot weather, but during the winter, depending on the temperature, it could be freezing). Also, there is no door on the bathroom, just a curtain. It wasn't a problem for me, as it's just Val and her daughter, but it's something a little strange as you can't know if someone is in there or not and you open the curtain and the toilet is right there. There is also a frustrating lack of places to put your clothes in bathroom. I think this a great place to stay if you're on a budget, especially during the week, but not sure weekend price is worth it for the house's infrastructure. I think it would also be hard to stay here if you don't speak Portuguese, as getting clear directions about how to get the boat to Val's house was a bit confusing (and I'm fluent in Portuguese).

Val is really kind-hearted person and an excellent host. She helped me with some advices, we went together to the main village of the island. Matariz is quiete village with few people. If you are really love the nature you would love it. And if you want to hide from the whole world and to meditate -this place is really good. To get there is really simple, but to get around the island is a bit trickier) Overall, I am very glad to meet Val and her sweet daughter. I practise my portugeese and Val was so nice to cook delicious meals. Thanks again!

We stayed on the Ilha Grande for 3 days and had a very nice stay in Val´s home. She was a great host, helped us with everything and gave us good tips. There were some really nice beaches near to the beach of the house (Matariz) where you could walk to. The location of the house wasn´t the best. It was easy to go there and you can go by boat to the other beaches of the island for about 20-50R$, but the beach of matariz itself wasn´t the best. And it´s pretty dificult to buy food on the island, so you should bring everything before. All in all it was a very nice stay and it´s a good option if you want to visit the Ilha Grande with a smaller budget.
