Just off the coast of Portland, Maine in the Casco Bay, lies Long Island, where our charming Long island get-away cottage is located. It is our own family vacation home that we love dearly and are happy to share with guests.
Enjoy a long Fall weekend, or relaxing summer vacation week ...or two. Slow down and unwind on the thirty minute ferryboat ride to Long Island. Enjoy the beautiful beaches and quiet island life. It’s great for kids of all ages, and only a two hour drive from Boston.

The space
Hedman house is a 19th century island farmhouse that can sleep 4 adults (couples) plus 2 kids in the bedrooms, 2 more on the fold out couch. It is a small house, but there are three bedrooms upstairs, one with a queen size bed, one with a double bed, and one with two twins. The house is set back off the road, flanked by pine forest at the back and a large grassy lawn in front.

We've done some renovations to the interior and porch of the house, and a great-room addition is in the works. The house is still rustic and simple, but comfortable. It’s a very homey cottage, with old wooden painted floors and old but comfy furniture—things are worn, but welcoming. It’s not sleek or modern, but it’s easy to relax in.

The main floor has a bright living and dining room, spacious eat-in kitchen, and a large bathroom with full size tub & shower. There is a washer and dryer in the kitchen. The wrap-around porch is great for enjoying morning coffee and afternoon drinks. The ocean is a five minute walk from the house - in all directions - or a two-minute bike ride down the road! When we stay at Hedman house, we take the walk down to the beach and enjoy the sunset every day.
There is a TV, DVD player and a 1980's stereo that you can plug into with your smartphone or MP3 player ( if you have a headphone jack or adapter). We have a good selection of DVD's, books, puzzles and some board games, as well as rocks, shells and beach treasures all around the house. Bikes and beach gear are in the shed. If you are serious about a well tuned bike, consider bringing your own. We usually bring a bike or two for our family. The bikes in the shed can be in rough shape. I try to fix them up each year.

We can promise comfort and a sweet location, but please note that we live hours away, and we rely on the island community for our cleaners between renters, often with mixed results. We have every hope the house will be spotless for each guest group, but folks may need to expect some sand and dust, and some natural guests visiting occasionally too (spiders, mosquitoes). Our cleaner does come in before each guest arrival and cleans all the sheets, towels and freshens the bedrooms. She also vacuums, mops, and cleans the bathroom, kitchen and all the living areas. We provide starters of TP, paper-towels, laundry supplies, and soaps. You may want to bring extra supplies, or get them at the island store, if you have a large group. We try to keep our own belongings out of sight, but sometimes hats or raincoats sneak out.

Long is a great island to relax and take in the sun on the white sandy beaches, hike along breathtaking rocky coastline, explore wooded pathways rich with moss covered rocks, beautiful ferns and pine trees. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the natural beauty and slower pace of Island life. It’s a great and very safe place for kids of all ages to explore and play, even on their own. Enjoy the freshest Maine lobster caught right offshore, go crabbing with the kids, hunt for the prettiest shells and sea glass.

The island has multiple beaches to explore, with smooth sandy areas, rocky coasts and small quiet coves. There are large white sand beaches on the south end of the island. South Beach attracts day trippers from Portland and can get busy on the weekends. No worries though, there’s lots of beach to go around!

Where you’ll be

Long Island, Maine, United States

Long Island is a quiet, slow paced get away vacation spot. The cottage is set back off the road, on a large lot in a clearing. There are just two houses in sight, through the trees. You can walk and bike the island, often only coming across a few other people. There is the new library, town hall and small historic museum to visit, as well as the gift shop and two small general / grocery stores. There’s also a new bakery, a part time restaurant and an ice cream and snack shed down front, new this year.

For some fun, there are tennis and basket ball courts, and a great children’s playground at the island school. Inside, relax and enjoy the newspapers, periodicals, books and free wifi at the school public library.

Long Island is great for relaxing, enjoying good food, friends and family, play board games, and get back to the basics. There are numerous beaches, rocky cost lines, old forests and natural sites to explore.

I'm a designer, inventor, engineer and builder and I enjoy fixing-up and renovating homes. My family and I enjoy our good friends, food and drink and occasional travel. I own and manage the-up-keep on a few apartments locally, and I'm always looking for the next fixer-upper! We are also involved with the Yale community, and enjoy our urban / suburban lifestyle here in little New Haven.

During your stay

We live off the island, out of state. We rent the cottage for most of the summer and fall to help offset the cost of this beautiful get-away. The cottage is cleaned and made ready for each arriving guest or family, with fresh bedding, linens and some goodies in the fridge. We recommend that you stop at a grocery store on the mainland, or at the Boat House Beverage on Long Island to pick up some food upon your arrival.
We rely on our guests leaving the cottage as they found it, clean and neat, for the next guests, and to help our island cleaner.
