Carmelo and Olga were very friendly and accommodating, and Olga and Elena were excellent in communicating to coordinate our arrival and check-in. The house, which has origins dating back to at least the 1700s, was renovated, but is still very rustic. It is also filled, in almost every room, with a plethora of objects collected and carefully arranged in the various rooms. The overall aesthetic is shabby chic, and I think it is by design. A similar vibe is achieved in the garden. Amongst the fruit trees, olive trees, herbs, and vegetables are various tables, an overgrown bicycle, a non-functional well, a tarp-lined water feature, etc. The overall effect is that both house and garden are like a movie set, which, basically, they are. As Olga advised us upon checking in, they would be having wedding pictures taken at the house the following day, but only in the garden. Of course, we said we did not mind, as we were going to the Villa Romana dei Casale in the morning. However, when we decided to stop at the house for a quick lunch of bread, cheese, salami, and fruit, we found that photos were happening both in the garden and in the house. It worked out okay, but suggested, to me, that the main purpose of this house is as a photo studio and possibly as a reception location for weddings and events. That the house’s secondary purpose is as an accommodation is reflected by (1) the lack of privacy afforded among the three bedrooms (especially if anyone plans to use the third, lofted bedroom) because the doors and floors do not screen out any sound really at all, (2) the marginally functional kitchen, and (3) the marginally functional shower, which appears to be attributable to the dodgy water supply. Also, I note that the neighbor’s dogs barked late into the night on both nights. So, if you want a rustic experience, don’t plan to cook, and do not plan to use the loft bedroom, this might be a good choice; otherwise, look elsewhere. For us, it felt more like a cluttered movie set than a comfortable place to stay, even though our hosts were very gracious and accommodated our desired arrival and departure times with patience and friendliness. The fault was not in the hosts but in the house, for us at least.

Casa Anticamenta is a special place. A beautiful oasis in the heart of the Sicilian countryside with lots of personal touches. Booking with Elena was really easy. Hosts Olga and Carmelo were wonderfully welcoming and went out of their way to make sure I had everything I needed. The garden is incredible, and a perfect place to find your own place to sit, contemplate the world, or drink some lovely Sicilian wine. The house is full of art and beautiful objects - a photographer's paradise. I stayed there for a month to do some writing, accompanied by friends at various points - all of them found the house to be the perfect place for getting away from it all. It's also centrally located on the island, so easy to access many of Sicily's beautiful locations. Highlights included a visit to a local vineyard, a day trip to Taormina, fantastic meals out in local towns, and a local stargazing evening with Olga and Carmelo. I hope to return!

We are a family of five, with three children ranging from 15-23 years. We booked to stay at Casa Anticamenta so that we could be close to visiting the Roman Villa del Casale at Piazza Armerina and also the ancient Greek settlement at Morgantina. These trips require 45 -60 mins car drive. We stayed two nights at Casa Anticamenta, with Olga and Carmelo as our hosts. They regularly hire the house out for wedding shoots, and after asking us prior to arrival, we began our stay with the privilege of being part of such an event. The surrounding landscape is quite dry compared to the oasis that is Olga and Carmelo's garden. With beautiful trees, flowering shrubs, cacti and herbs, paths lead you on an adventure through their garden, with countless different alfresco dining areas, with ambient lighting at night. Then there is the house! Wow.... so beautiful. Each room lovingly restored and dressed with beautiful furniture, antiques and paintings. This house has so much character! Olga and Carmelo have thought of everything for your needs and comfort and made us feel so welcome in their home, helping us to plan our trips with much enthusiasm. We all fell in love with Josephine the cat, and her little kitten! If only we could have stayed longer! Thank you Olga and Carmelo, we have left with some very happy memories. xx
