We started off our European vacation at Irene's place. We were in the area for a wedding in Konstantz, which was a quick 20 min drive away. We considered staying locally at a hotel, but wanted to try a more authentic approach, experiencing the local Swiss culture. Starting with the drive leaving the Zurich airport and through the Swiss mountains and countryside, we were in love with Switzerland!
Finding Irene's place was relatively straight forward. She kept in touch to ensure that our schedules connected, so we had a smooth check-in at her place. Albeit, the house was 200+ years old, she presented us with all of the amenities that we would have expected at any typical hotel. She even provided us with a secure parking spot, which I want expecting.
We settled in, unpacked, went for a swim in the lake (which was surprisingly warm!), took a nap, and started our Switzerland/Konstantz intro to the vaca.
We weren't arriving back until late, but Irene said that she sleeps through anything. She said not to worry about what time we returned at... and to enjoy ourselves!
Well, she's certainly able to sleep through anything, as the local church bells struck every 15 minutes throughout the night! They weren't so pleasant the first night, but we were able to adapt a bit by the second night.
The first morning, we woke up and grabbed some eats from the local bakery, about 200 meters away. WOW! SO TASTY! They didn't speak English at all and didn't take plastic, but we figured it all out. We headed back to the house to have breakfast and conversation with Irene. She certainty has some stories about her worldly travels! I have to say, we had wonderful conversation for being such very different people.
The village, the townsfolk, and the experience was something that I would love to do again. Switzerland is a beautiful & magical country! The scenes kept reminding me of Epcot at Disney, only this was the real deal and the prices were much better. Her village couldn't be much more authentic! It was so incredibly relaxing to take a break here. It felt *very* necessary for the brain, especially if you're looking for that relaxing vacation experience.
My only regret was assuming that the rest of our travels would be as amazing as the start. We will most certainly come back to experience more of Switzerland, and most likely spend some more time at Irene's as well. It's been a highlight of our trip for me!
