The space

Situated within the borgo (hamlet) of Livizzano which is one of seven within San Cassiano di Controne. Our house, looks out to the mountain and neighbouring villages in the distance, the view is totally uninterrupted.

This double room has a functional layout and quiet location with views of the fields, mountains and distant villages. Light and airy with a mix of modern and antique furniture. The dedicated adjacent bathroom is typically Italian - bidet, shower, toilet & face basin. The room is naturally cool in the summer months due to the thick walls.

Breakfast is included in our room price, however we offer an optional meal service in addition. Whether you would like us to prepare a light lunch, take away picnic hamper or evening meal it would be our pleasure to serve you. Meals are taken on the terrace under our illuminated gazebo with views of the valley, mountain and neighbouring villages in the distance. For the adventurous there is Quad Bike riding, Paint balling, horse riding all in and around the villages and walks/treks to Monte Prato Fiorito can be arranged with a local guide.

In the main town of Bagni di Lucca, we have a beautiful outdoor swimming pool where it's possible to spend all day long should you choose to. Bagni di Lucca is a spa town and no visit would be complete without a visit to the spa for some well being and relaxation and offers classical thermal cures and treatments and programs specifically geared toward thermal well being.

San Cassiano di Controne consists of seven villages and is situated at the foothills of the Monte Prato Fiorito. The village has a post office, butchers, "alimentari" (local one-stop supermarket), trattoria (local cuisine restaurant) and two bars. The church (La Chiesa) dates back from the 10th Century and is believed to have been built on the remains of a temple dedicated to Diana. In the 12th Century it was enlarged and has a beautiful facade with a portal with architrave lunette and finely decorated with motifs pre-Romanesque. The oldest part of the church is the campanile (bell tower).

There is a bus service from the village to the neighbouring villages along the Controneria to the main town of Bagni di Lucca and beyond.

This is a beautiful area, very peaceful and tranquil and the people who live and stay here are fantastic. As usual within all Italian towns and villages there are a series of festa and San Cassiano has it's fair share, but is most famously known for its tri-annual "Crucifisso" which takes place on the last weekend of July. The next festa will take place on 2017. Il Crucifisso is a religious festival which was celebrated following a terrible plague that hit the area but the people of San Cassiano came away unscathed and as such they began giving thanks for this miracle. In the winter, nearby (30 minutes drive) Abetone offers skiing for all levels.

Doreen is a very good communicator, is a native English speaker, and delivers what she promises. We had a warm welcome, she walked 300 m down the road to guide us to her premises. Limited parking lots near the house required usually to walk a bit; no big deal. Doreen is a perfect host offering nice breakfast on the lovely terrace. Surprise: on a bit fresh morning there were blankets waiting for us on our chairs at breakfast.

Thank you for such warm words; my enthusiasm was matched by you and your wife's warmth and obvious enjoyment at being at our home. It goes without saying that should you both choose to visit again, you would be very welcome!

We had a perfect stay at Il Nascondiglio with Doreen and Quitano (son). The welcome was very friendly. The room is nice with a perfect double bed. The bathroom is in the hallway next door to the bedroom with private use. The view from the terrace/back yard is very nice and the pergola, were we had our diners and could sit hiding from the sun was idyllic and romantic. You can also choose to take dinner and we can really recommend this. The food is perfect and various. You can tell that Doreen likes to cook. The surroundings are beautiful but there are not many walking routes and if there are they are overgrown and you have to use navigation to find your way. There are no signed tracks in the direct surrounding. But when you walk there you have very nice views over the surroundings though. Although the water was cut off during the last days of our stay we wouldn't have missed the time we spend there.

Born in the UK from Caribbean origins I now live in Tuscany with my 10 year old son. I am a freelancer working with companies and individuals all over the globe from my mountain village home.

I am a foodie and enjoy cooking and entertaining people around my kitchen table and couldn't do without my trusty kitchen gadgets and herb garden to keep me going. Living here has made me re-appreciate good, fresh, local ingredients and simple foods.

We always enjoy having guests because we get to share with them the simple pleasures of being here. I remember my first summer here how I marveled and still do at the sight of the fire flies dancing up the path toward the house, as we have an open field at the back. Our neighbours hosts impromptu suppers which everyone is always invited to.
