Live like a local! Five-minute drive to an uncrowded beach, quiet residential neighborhood, true home set-up with everything you could need in the kitchen, washing machine with supplies, plus all your beach stuff. Nearby grocery stores, restaurants, surfboard/SUP/kayak rentals and lessons 5 minutes away. Taxes are included in the price (GET and TAT).
Hale Aikāne, Home for Friends - The tropical apartment takes advantage of the ground floor of our home with a private entry and fenced in lanai in peaceful Wai'anae. This is definitely NOT in the city - normally quiet (only regular neighborhood noises like kids and dogs) and enough outdoor space for a family. When you take off your rubbah slippaz (flip-flops) upon entering, you'll enjoy an open plan room featuring large windows, a full kitchen, and family room followed by two bedrooms and a spacious bathroom all just 3/4 mile from the Poka'i Bay beach park.
Your kitchen is well equipped with a full-size oven/stove, microwave, side-by-side fridge/freezer with cold water dispenser, slow cooker, and cupboards stocked with glasses and dishes and cutlery, cook and bakeware, kitchen tools galore, bar utensils, storage pieces, coffee maker, kettle, toaster, picnic supplies, and a few staples. The beach towels are waiting for you alongside a cooler, beach bags, and such that are available to borrow. Just ask us if you can't find what you need and we'll find a solution.
If you need a rest from seeing this beautiful island, the family room provides a large flat-screen TV with HD cable, DVD player, surround-sound, a dozen DVDs, and wii with balance board (bring your own games). You'll have wireless internet if you'd like to stay plugged-in.
Ready to unplug? Borrow a book from your shelf and relax on your lanai under the table shade or feel the warmth of the sun in your well-maintained yard. You can grill out for dinner. Maybe star-gazing is your thing - this is a perfect place with little light pollution. You also have some games to choose from: checkers, cribbage, backgammon, dominoes, Sorry!, Jenga, Uno, Phase 10, and playing cards.
On the more practical side, your bathroom has a clean shower/tub, sink, and plenty of places to hang wet swimwear, toiletry bags, and towels. We've supplied you with towels, toilet paper, and a hair-dryer. The ironing board is found in a bedroom closet.
Like most local homes, there is no A/C, but our Wai'anae Valley wind is usually enough to keep you cool. You'll have ceiling fans and other fans if needed.
One bedroom has two windows and a queen size Sleep Number bed (each side can be customized to your preferred firmness).
Bedroom two has two twin beds that we can make into one king bed. Please let us know your preference so we can have the room ready to your liking.
You'll find two shelving units in the apartment for storing your groceries, souvenirs, gifts, and such. There is a large shelf in the bathroom to store your empty suitcases out of your way. You can live out of your suitcase or unpack and be at home. We have an HE front loading wash machine just around the side of the house from your door and we use solar to dry (clothes lines - faster than a dryer).
Hungry? Wai'anae has two grocery stores, a drug store open 24 hours, chain fast-food places, and many family-owned restaurants featuring menus of Hawaiian, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Puerto Rican, Mexican, seafood, breakfast items, or mainland American foods. Ko 'Olina, just 11 miles away, provides the nearest nicer and fine dining with reservations highly recommended. Dining in Honolulu is feasible with a 45+ minute drive.
Speaking of driving... Hale Aikāne is 36 miles from Honolulu. In rush times (6-8:30 am; 3:30-6 pm), that means between one and a half and two hours driving each way. During the rest of the day, you'll take only 45 to 60 minutes. We're 45 minutes from the airport with non-rush hour traffic. Kapolei (O'ahu's second city) is 20 minutes away and has Target, WalMart, Costco (cheapest for groceries), mainland style grocery stores, department stores, nicer dining, three cinemas, and more of a mainland feel overall. If golf is your thing, Makaha Golf course is 10 minutes drive from here and other courses can be found within a 30-minute drive. No car? From your apartment, it's a 10-minute walk to the Wai'anae bus terminal for express buses into Honolulu. The local bus line picks up at the end of our road. It's nice to drive to the beach so you can take more stuff, but the walk is short as well.
We have local knowledge and your apartment has many guidebooks. Please also see our listing's Guidebook which we are slowly developing. We love living in paradise and enjoy sharing that blessing. We're available to help you in the evening and some days... or you'll find us at the bay.
Check-in time is 4:00 p.m. Check-out is 11:00 a.m. If you would like an early check-in or late check-out, please request it when booking and we'll do our best to accommodate you.
Square footage of your apartment: 555
Square footage of your yard: 626
The unit and yard are entirely divided off from our home with a separate entrance and fenced-in yard. The laundry is shared and you have access at all times.
It's up to you concerning interaction with our family. We love to get to know our guests and we appreciate your privacy. You choose!
Your neighborhood while you stay is typical Hawaiian style. This is not the mainland even though we are in America. We are one of three homes on this cul-de-sac inhabited by transplants. Occasionally, you'll hear kids, dogs, and even a rooster. The houses on our street are mostly multi-generational so we do have cars parked on the street. Even with lots of neighbors, it's quiet here without car or air traffic - just the rustling of the trade winds through the trees. You'll be within walking distance of the beach, but driving is easier and you can take more toys - which you may borrow from us. Just ask! There are over ten named beaches within a ten-minute drive north or south of your home away from home. And just about any place has water access if you prefer no company. The leeward coast's population is 98% Pacific Islander and a few blessed others who found their piece of paradise.
Proximity to the beach is key for our family. Only 3/4 mile, but we mostly drive there since we have large beach toys, but my kids ride their bikes or walk since they only take a towel.
Public transport is convenient in proximity, but time-consuming as we live 30+ miles from Honolulu and the well-known tourist attractions. If you're after local style, uncrowded, beautiful beaches and hikes then you're in the right place.
*Bedroom 2 has EITHER a king bed OR 2 single beds. Not both. The home sleeps 4.*
*All Oahu listings should mention the traffic on Oahu and potential traffic issues on the less-populate sides of the island. The leeward side has one four-lane road (2 lanes each way) in and out of our area. At peak times or extraordinary circumstances, it can pose an unwelcome delay.*
Driving any place on Oahu can be a challenge some days and not others. This is more obvious in areas such as the quiet leeward coast or the north shore in which we have one-way in and one-way out. Most days, this is fine except during rush hour. Planning accordingly will help you avoid this issue. This home is best suited for those who want to spend more time enjoying Oahu's quieter beaches, fewer crowds and more local people with some time at the "must see" locations. Honolulu is better if you prefer instant access to the activities of a bustling city with an international flair of tourists. The windward coast is better if you prefer a mainland vibe.
Taxes included in rental amount:
GE: at 4.5% for State of Hawai'i and 'Oahu
TAT: at 9.25% for State of Hawai'i
You will get a code to the lockbox. The unit and yard are entirely divided off from our home with a separate entrance and fenced yard. Your dedicated parking space is the left-most side of the driveway. Laundry is shared and you have access at all times.
Interaction with guests
It's up to you how much you would like to interact with us and/or our dogs. Some folks hang out with us and others we barely see. We will respect your privacy so if you need anything or just want to chat, let us know.
Other things to note
Traffic. It's as it says in the listing. Full disclosure: occasionally there is an accident and that can make the drive much longer. We're in a smaller town and, like most of the island, there is one 4-lane road in/out. There is a contra-flow set up around 3pm until about 6pm to alleviate incoming traffic. Coming into Waianae will be 3 lanes. Super! Going out will be 1 lane. This can add 20 minutes to a drive towards Kapolei and town.
* No smoking on the property. Please go on to the sidewalk and downwind. Do not drop cigarette butts/ends on the ground, bushes, and such. Properly dispose of them safely.
* As is local custom, please remove your shoes prior to or immediately upon entering the unit. This keeps the floors sanitary and the unit cleaner.
* Our street has children playing outside, so please drive slowly and carefully up our road.
* Clean up all food immediately to continue to keep the home bug-free.
* Our pets are fenced away from your place, but if you like dogs, they love to make new friends when we're home. They are harmless, but it is healthier for them to let us introduce you.
From Dec 15, 2017 - Jan 02, 2018 the minimum stay is 12 nights.
We're a family of three people and three dogs that love island life. I am a substitute teacher and my children are students - one in college, one in high school. Our favorite activities are outdoors and mostly in the ocean. All year, we love having visitors to share the blessings found on the less-traveled westside of O'ahu.
